Due to a problem with the steering, Stellantis is calling back about 90,000 brand-new Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs in the United States. The Jeep Grand Cherokee L recall includes 35,407 SUVs between January 27, 2021, and April 4, 2023. The program also contains 59,935 Jeep Grand Cherokees made between October 19, 2021, and April 4, 2023. Transport Canada still needs to estimate how many Jeeps are affected nationwide. The company that makes these SUVs says that some steering columns were wrong during the assembly process. If this happens, the shaft could come loose from the U-joint, which links to the steering column, making it impossible for the driver to steer. Stellantis says drivers might “notice play in the steering and noise when turning” before the U-joint breaks. The company says it hasn’t heard of any crashes because of the problem. Even though each part of the steering shaft is perfect, it was put together wrong on the Grand Cherokee assembly line. The bad way line was fixed on April 4. Owners are told to take their Jeeps to a shop to have the steering column checked. A professional will put the parts back on the right way in cars that have this problem.
