The Cayenne is one of the best luxury performance SUVs you can buy, even though it isn’t the cheapest Porsche or SUV. Because it looked like a coupe, there was no need for a trunk. It’s always been fast and well-balanced on the road and much better off-road than it seems. But with the third generation coming out in 2019, it was time for a change, so Porsche gave the Cayenne a new look before Stuttgart’s future three-row SUV took over as the top dog.

Even though the Cayenne has more room for people and cargo, the larger SUV needs to think about how the Cayenne drives. This review of the 2024 update will start as part of what Michael Schanze, vice president of the Cayenne Product Line, calls “the most extensive product updates in Porsche’s history.”

Not having faith

All cars below the Turbo GT, like the Cayenne, S, and E-Hybrid, come with a standard steel spring and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). We could do this when Porsche let us take the 2024 Cayenne for a test drive. “It’s all very deliberate and well-controlled, like a dancer,” we said about how the weight falls on the outside wheels and how the suspension crouches, takes a set and then lets go as you leave the turn. Because every Cayenne works the same way, a driver of a base model can easily keep up with a Turbo GT driver who needs to push harder.

A two-chamber adaptive air suspension system is either stock on the Turbo GT or can be added as an extra. Because of this and the two-valve dampers, the new Cayenne can tell the difference between its Normal, Sport, and Sport Plus drive modes even better. We could see how the Turbo GT gave the lower-speed cars a more refined look. The extra Lightweight Sport Package will make the Cayenne even more stable and sure-footed by cutting its weight by up to 72 pounds.

The 2024 Cayenne Turbo GT also comes with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, rear-axle steering, and 22-inch GT design wheels with high-performance tires. The prototype had Pirelli Corsa tires when we tried it, while lower-end models had Nexen N Fera Sport SUV tires.

Old Face, New Body

The Cayenne’s outside looks like it has had more than just a mid-cycle update; it seems both the same and different. The front of the 2024 model has been redesigned. The fenders are now more aggressive, the hood has been changed, and the headlights are shaped like the Cayenne ones. From the back, you can see the “three-dimensional” tail lights and the redesigned grille, which includes the license plate holder and makes the back end look smoother. The back of the Cayenne could be one of the most understated in the car’s history.

Also, three new colors, Arctic Grey, Montego Blue Metallic, and Algarve Blue Metallic, will be offered. For 2024, you can also get new 20- to 22-inch wheels to change the look of your Cayenne. All Cayenne trims are available as either coupes or SUVs, except for the Turbo GT, which is only available as a coupe and comes with the unique GT Design wheels described above.

Things to do with technology

Any new luxury SUV will, of course, have features that use the latest ADAS innovations. The Cayenne comes with Active Speed Limit Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control with a new feature called “Evasion Assist” that helps drivers avoid obstacles between 31 and 93 mph, and “Turn Assist,” which keeps an eye on traffic coming up to 6 mph. The improved InnoDrive system from Porsche is a possibility. It now has Active Lane Keep and Intersection Assist.

The display and control layout in the 2024 Cayenne’s cab has also been changed a lot. It now has the Porsche Driving Experience added to it. The most-used controls for the driver are on the steering wheel, while new ADAS-related rules are on the left stalk. Since the gear selector has been moved to the dashboard, the center console has more room for storage and more extensive back-panel air conditioning controls. The volume knob you can feel, and the air vent controls you must change by hand are both bigger. This is part of the experience’s attempt to find the right mix of digital and analog features.

The new instrument panel for 2024 is a curved 12.6-inch screen that stands on its own. This is a first for Porsche. Also, the driver will have access to instrumentation and data through an improved HUD, which will be a choice. On the 12.3-inch Porsche Communication Management (PCM) screen, native apps like Spotify and Apple Music are now available. A 10.9-inch display in front of the passenger is another first for Porsche. This display lets the passenger handle the entertainment system or look at performance data and maps like a high-performance co-driver on the road. The driver can’t see this screen because of a particular layer. This lets them keep their eyes on the road ahead and not be sidetracked by it.

The S gets back its V-8

The Cayenne S will also get the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, making it more powerful than the car from 2023. Also, it gives the S 34 hp and 37 lb-ft more horsepower and torque than the turbocharged 3.0 liter V-6, for a total of 468 hp and 442 lb-ft without any electricity. Except for the Turbo GT, all grades now have a turbocharged eight-cylinder engine. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 that comes with the standard Cayenne will still be offered, but it will now have 348 horsepower and 368 pound-feet more power than it did in 2023.

If you want to get excited, you won’t be left out of the power game. The base model’s V-6 engine stays the same, but the new electric motor adds 174 horsepower, bringing the total output to 463 horsepower, eight more than in 2023. It also gets a new battery pack with a higher capacity, from 17.9 kWh to 25.9 kWh, which improves its range. Porsche says that the electric motor’s efficiency has also improved, but Stuttgart doesn’t mention that both the battery pack and the engine have gotten better, so the range has gone up. The only natural way to measure it is by how fast it charges with AC power. The Cayenne E-Hybrid can be fully charged in 2.5 hours with a new 11-kW charger.

The top-of-the-line Porsche 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine from the Turbo GT is coming back, at least in Cayenne models that aren’t electric. It has 19 more horsepower than the 2023 model and much more power than the S. Porsche says the 2024 Cayenne Turbo GT can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. It has 650 horsepower. It can also go as fast as 189 miles per hour, which is very fast for an SUV.

The Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid is the new top-of-the-line model for 2024. This model blends the best parts of the gas and hybrid Cayennes. It has the same V-8 engine and 591 horsepower as the gas model, but it also has a 25.9-kWh battery and a 174-hp motor from the hybrid model. With 729 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, the Turbo E-Hybrid can get the Cayenne from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and up to 183 mph. The Turbo E-Hybrid is, without a doubt, the most powerful Cayenne ever made. The basic Cayenne and the sporty Cayenne Coupe can use the same engine.

The prices start at around $81,000

You can buy your 2024 Porsche Cayenne right now, and Porsche stores will start getting them in the summer of 2023. The base price of a Cayenne SUV is $80,850, while the base price of a Coupe is $85,950. The base price of the Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV is $93,350, while the base price of the E-Hybrid Coupe is $97,350. The new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 in the Cayenne S starts at $97,350 for the SUV version and $103,750 for the Coupe version. When compared to the Coupe-only Turbo GT, which starts at $197,950, the more powerful new Turbo E-Hybrids, which start at $148,550 for the basic Cayenne and $153,050 for the Coupe, almost seem like deals.
