• Ford Performance promises a track-only Mustang Dark Horse.
  • Between the legal Dark Horse and the more intense GT3 and GT4 competition is where the new Dark Horse R steps in.
  • The IMSA-approved spec series Dark Horse R will cost $146,595.

Ford Performance has several race vehicles for sale this summer, including its third Mustang-based model. The Dark Horse R race car bridges the gap between the road-going Dark Horse and the more competitive GT3 and GT4 variants.

Stang Ready

The Dark Horse R is a race car. Thus you won’t see its logo on local roads. IMSA-sanctioned Mustang Challenge will host the new vehicle. The 2024 Mustang Challenge will exclusively feature Dark Horse Rs.

The road car’s 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 engine with 500 horsepower, Tremec six-speed manual gearbox, Torsen limited-slip differential, and 3.73 final-drive ratio are used. A Recaro FIA racing seat, quick-release steering wheel, race harness, and other safety measures replaced the factory seats and other interior pieces.

Race-ready features include upgraded cooling and oil systems, Borla exhaust, Multimatic dampers, adjustable anti-roll bars, and Brembo brakes. The Dark Horse R boasts flow-formed 19 by 10.5-inch front and 19 by 11-inch rear wheels and Mustang Challenge-specific Michelin race slicks.

Very expensive

A race car costs more than a Ford Mustang. The $146,595 Dark Horse R will be ready for the Mustang Challenge season 2024.
