A deal between Formula 1 and General Motors will make the American car company the eleventh team on the grid in 2026. The company wants to make its power units before the end of the decade and will do business under the Cadillac name. The team will leverage Andretti Global’s current resources in the United States and Silverstone, England. Mario Andretti will lead the team’s board. Formula One and General Motors have officially agreed that the American carmaker will become the eleventh team in the league. General Motors and Formula One announced that the team will be named Cadillac. The Cadillac team will fight as a customer team when it first joins the sport in 2026, even though GM plans to use its power unit by the end of the decade. Formula 1 stated that the company’s strong commitment to establishing a “full works” team influenced the decision to allow GM to compete. With Formula 1’s continued expansion in the U.S., we have always seen the inclusion of a major American brand like GM/Cadillac on the grid, along with GM’s potential as a future power unit supplier, as a way to boost the sport’s value and appeal. Reports say that ten months after the FIA’s governing body accepted Andretti Global’s Cadillac-backed proposal, the sport itself turned it down. There were rumors that the denial was caused by a disagreement between F1 officials and Michael Andretti, who used to be the CEO of Andretti Global but is no longer there. When GM’s deal got rid of the Andretti branding, the sport let the entry go through. Wayne Taylor Racing, Spire Motorsports, and Andretti Global are all owned and run by TWG Global, which will become the team’s new partner. The new team will use the tools that TWG and Andretti Global already have in Silverstone, England, and the US. Mario Andretti, Michael’s father and the most recent American to claim the Formula One championship, will serve on the team’s board.
