The other day, I was in the kitchen and saw that one of my drawers was leaking. I felt a rush of very strong dread. Heavy rain made my roof start to leak, and neither I nor my bank account were ready for it. Because of this, I feel bad for some 2024 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra owners because GM is stopping the sale and service of models with split roofs.

This GM Trucks study says that the roofs of about 3,067 trucks, such as the Silverado and Sierra, are breaking under the molding next to the doors. At this point, the issue is not unique to any model or trim, and it is not a factory issue. GM is aware of how many roof-split cars there are and what numbers they have. So, a fix was made available for any affected trucks that are already owned. There was also a stop-sale, which means that any affected trucks that were still in stock at a store could not be sold.

GM is no longer selling some Silverado and Sierra trucks because their roofs have split

Reports say that GM is telling sellers to find the cracks, drill holes at both ends of the fissures to stop them from spreading, MIG weld the cracks, and then use seam sealer to fix the roofs that are splitting. After fixing the crack, the dealer will paint over it. If everything is done right, you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference. All of this will be taken care of by the warranty, so the owner won’t have to pay for it, and the dealer will provide loaner cars while the fixes are being made.

There is doubt about the fix, though. Because the fix involves MIG welding and seam sealing a hole in the truck’s roof, Redditors are worried that the quality of the repair might vary. Poor care can cause rust and water damage, even if the cracks are small and thin. It’s not that all shops do bad work, but I have seen a lot of them.

GM knows which trucks are affected and has told sellers to fix any unsold trucks before selling them. Let’s hope that customers are told which trucks were affected and how they were fixed. If you find out that the truck you want to buy has a fixed roof crack, it might change your mind. They could also wait until the models come out in 2025 to escape having to deal with the cracks.
