General Motors revealed plans to invest $888 million into its Tonawanda Propulsion facility to support the manufacturing of a new-generation V-8 engine. The factory located in Buffalo, New York, is scheduled to begin manufacturing the new V-8 engines in 2027, a timeline that likely coincides with the launch of the next-generation Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM claims that its new V-8 engines will enhance both performance and fuel efficiency, with production set to take place at the Flint Engine plant. General Motors has invested a significant amount of money in electric cars. In the past few years, it has released several new cars, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV truck, the Cadillac Escalade IQ, and the Chevy Equinox EV, which is priced in the middle range. GM is not giving up on internal combustion engines, though. Yesterday, the company announced that it would be spending $888 million to develop a new version of the V-8 engine. The sixth version of GM’s small-block V-8 will begin production in 2027 at the Tonawanda Propulsion facility in Buffalo, New York. A GM press release stated that the $888 million investment would upgrade the factory and provide new tools and equipment for producing the next V-8. From now until 2027, the Tonawanda plant will produce the fifth-generation V-8 engine, available in 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter versions. Between now and 2027, the Tonawanda facility will manufacture the fifth-generation V-8 engine, which will be offered in both 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter variants. Also made by Tonawanda are the 6.2-liter V-8 engine in the Corvette sports car and the 4.3-liter V-6 engine based on the V-8 engine in the Chevrolet Express van. General Motors has announced that its upcoming lineup of full-size trucks and SUVs will feature a next-generation V-8 engine, which will be manufactured at the company’s Tonawanda plant. The next version of the Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups is expected to be released in 2027, coinciding with the start of production. GM’s next-generation full-size cars will soon include updated versions of the Chevy Suburban and Tahoe, the GMC Yukon, and the Cadillac Escalade. These cars were all redesigned for the 2025 model year. General Motors asserts that its new engines are designed to run more efficiently, generate fewer emissions, and offer enhanced performance. The Tonawanda site came next, with an investment of $500 million. The Flint Engine plant is also working on the sixth-generation V-8.
