General Motors has said that it will start making its own Formula 1 power units for Andretti Cadillac in 2028. These will include engines and hybrid parts. However, Andretti’s entry into the sport has not been approved by F1, so this is a big point. GM is using some of its multibillion-dollar power right now.

Cadillac was already said to be planning to join the prepared Andretti Global F1 team. Now, General Motors has said it wants to turn Andretti’s F1 idea into a factory-backed powerhouse that can work together on chassis and engine design.

GM will only work with Andretti to make engines for its Formula One cars

You need F1 approval

Andretti Global still needs to get a license from F1 before it can compete. The FIA has already checked out Andretti Global when it was looking for possible new F1 teams. Officials say that present F1 grid members are openly pushing to bring GM in without accepting Andretti’s team. This is a very heated process that is still going on. After strongly opposing Andretti’s F1 plan, James Vowles, the head of Williams, has suggested that they could get GM to join forces with them. According to the Associated Press, F1 has told the company to get rid of Andretti and work with a more experienced team. One thing that GM CEO Mark Reuss said this week was, “GM is committed to partnering with Andretti to race in F1.”

And so on. F1 wants GM to join, but it wants to put its money, time, and tech into one of its current teams. GM wants to get into Formula One racing with a close partner of its own. GM wants its plans to come true. “One of GM’s partners” is too mild of a word for what Andretti told him, though. American race car driver Andretti has a great reputation. He runs the biggest Honda team in the IMSA, is the current Formula E champion, and has won three of the last fifteen Indianapolis 500s.

Andretti’s plan is by far the most complete to join the series since Toyota did so as a 12th team in 2002. This is because they have added an engine partner that will only work with their program. But the fact that adding an eleventh F1 team means the ten teams that are already there will make less money will stay the same. People who don’t own a Formula One team might find this dispute offensive, but Andretti and Cadillac need to get past it in order to fight for a spot on the grid.

If Andretti Cadillac joins the Eleventh Team

If the Andretti Cadillac team is added as the eleventh, they will have to use an engine from a different company from 2025 to 2027. As of 2026, when new engine specs come out, the partnership will cover two versions of powertrains from any manufacturer they choose. Alpine was supposed to be that partner at first, but the French company said a month ago that their deal to provide the team with engines had ended.

GM, Honda, and Audi have all said they want to build a motor that will meet Formula One’s new, more streamlined engine rules, which will take effect in 2026. However, the teams are still getting ready for the change. When the new rules start to apply, engines will still be supplied by Red Bull’s engine shop, Mercedes-AMG, Ferrari, Alpine, and Alpine. However, Red Bull’s engine program will work closely with Ford, adding another manufacturer’s name to the grid.

Cadillac is already racing in the IMSA GTP and FIA World Endurance Championship Hypercar classes with the new V-Series—r racer for 2023. The company also plans to participate in Formula 1. The IMSA title was won by Action Express Racing, one of two factory teams participating this season under the Cadillac Racing brand. They won by just 21 points. Along with the NHRA drag racing series, GM also backs factory teams in NASCAR stock car racing, IndyCar open wheel racing, and GT racing in both sports car titles. Notably, Andretti races against GM teams in both IMSA GTP and IndyCar. One day, he will race in Formula One with Cadillac.
