• GMC and Earth Cruiser are making an off-road version of the Hummer EV truck. Later this summer, they will present it as an idea.
  • A teaser image of a Hummer EV shows a giant roof and solar panels. This should make it possible for the overlanding vehicle to stay off the grid for longer.
  • GMC says that the Hummer EV truck can go 329 miles on a single charge, but the overlanding system will add much weight and lower that number.

Earth Cruiser Overland Vehicles, based in Oregon and makes tough all-terrain RVs, is working with GMC to create a one-of-a-kind Hummer EV vehicle. The concept, displayed later this summer, is meant to depict what overlanding, a new trend that blends camping and off-roading, would look like in the future. The goal is to make an overland unfit for the Hummer EV truck that people can buy.

Along with the announcement of the cooperation, a cryptic teaser photo from the side of the Hummer EV prototype was posted. The SUV, set to hit dealerships this spring, has a more extended roof than the regular Hummer EV. It also has a few solar panels on top, which could let the Overlanding Hummer go farther and stay off the grid for longer. Because the side of the off-road camper is rounded, there should be more room in the back.

Weight should be eye-catching.

The Hummer EV can handle rough terrain, but the primary difficulty with this idea and its potential to be made in the future is that it can only go so far. The Hummer EV is already rather hefty. In the truck, it weighs 9640 pounds. The weight of the overland arrangement will go up, making the electric drivetrain less effective.

In our 75 mph highway test, a 2022 Hummer EV went 290 miles, although GMC says it should be able to go 329 miles. When the concept is shown later this year, GMC and Earth Cruiser should be ready to give some choices.
