• Honda and Nissan have agreed to do a study to see if they can work together in the future.
  • The main goal of the partnership will be to find parts for software used in cars and parts for electric vehicles.
  • The two companies said they “cannot afford to be complacent” in the EV market because they are falling behind. However, it needs to be made clear how long this investigation will take.

Honda and Nissan said this morning that they are considering collaborating. The two companies signed an agreement to collaborate on “vehicle electrification and intelligence,” which will include automobile software platforms. They will now investigate whether their plan to collaborate is feasible.

Titans two want to get together

Both Honda and Nissan said they made the deal because they thought it was “necessary to combine their strengths,” but they didn’t say much else. Automotive News says the two automakers will discuss sharing and working together on battery systems, electric motors, and other important EV parts.

“Are we going to make it? AN says that’s the question” that Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe put forward. Sources say that both businesses are worried about the rise of Chinese companies in the EV market, like BYD and Tesla. The Nissan Leaf and the Ariya SUV are the two electric cars that the company now sells in the US. With plans to release a car by 2026, Honda is currently working with General Motors to make the Prologue, which will be the company’s first fully electric vehicle.

“By 2030, we have to be a top runner, in a position to fight against the top players,” he said to AN. At first, there are no plans to share car designs or rebrand models directly. The focus is on making EV parts smaller and cheaper.

“We cannot afford to be complacent,” said Makoto Uchida, the CEO of Nissan, in an interview with AN. “We need to speed up electrification, which requires money and a lot of it,” a supposed high-level employee said. Our first goal is to make our supply base more efficient.
