Honda Race showed off the Civic Type R-GT, which is a new race version of the Civic Type R. Beginning in 2024, the car will run in the top GT500 class of the Japanese Super GT Series. On July 25 and 26, the race-ready CTR will be put through its paces at the Okayama International Circuit in Japan. We’re in love with the 11th-generation Honda Civic Type R. Like being utterly smitten in love. It’s the fastest front-drive car we’ve ever driven around Virginia International Raceway (VIR) and a 10Best and Editors’ Choice winner. Please excuse us while we take in the beauty of the brand-new Civic Type R-GT. In 2024, the CTR-GT will race in Japan’s top Super GT series, the GT500 series. Honda hasn’t said much about the car, but from the one picture we’ve seen, it looks like the Type R-GT means business. Two Civic Type R cars’ worth of power Honda said that Super GT rules only allow a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but we still expect the output to be between 550 and 650 horsepower. We’d pay to see how the Type R-GT beats the original CTR’s 2:58.8 lap time at VIR when it has almost twice as much power and a lot of weight, aerodynamic, and technical changes. The Type R-GT and the regular Type R look very different, even based on just one picture. We expected that, but we were surprised by how sharp the Honda’s aero looks. You can feel how much they want to do well. Yasuharu Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation, told people to have high hopes for the Civic Type R-GT in the coming years. “Starting in the 2024 season, we will compete in the SUPER GT GT 500 class, which is one of the best in Japan.” We plan to win the title in our first year because we are determined to do well. On July 25 and 26, the right people will test the car at the Okayama International Circuit in Japan.
