• According to a recent report from Reuters, General Motors and Hyundai are nearing the completion of an agreement to jointly utilize two commercial electric vans.
  • In return for the vans, GM could give Hyundai pickups that it can sell in North America as its own.
  • The talks may also result in the merger of firms that work on EV technology, such as high-voltage batteries and computer chips.

Reuters says that Hyundai and General Motors are in talks about a deal in which Hyundai will give General Motors two business electric vans.   Reuters was told by someone who knew about the talks that GM would get Hyundai pickup trucks to rebrand and sell in North America in exchange for the vans.

Hyundai May Eventually Offer A Rebranded Variant Of The Chevy Colorado

Reuters reports that Hyundai will create and build the vans that will be sold under both names if the deal goes through. At first, the vans would come from South Korea, but papers seen by Reuters show that Hyundai plans to move van production to North America by 2028. The vans could be made by a third-party company, by a business that already makes other things, or in a new building.

The American car company would sell Hyundai its mid-size pickups, which are called the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado. Reuters reports that Hyundai also wants a rebranded version of General Motors’ full-size trucks, but GM has not so far.

The claim is based on what was said when the two automakers signed an agreement to work together on supply lines, clean energy technology, and cars last year. If the talks go well, an even more comprehensive partnership may form. It will focus on buying or improving EV technologies together, like computer chips and high-voltage battery systems.

“Both companies continue to explore potential areas of collaboration,” General Motors told Invoice Pricing in a statement, but they wouldn’t say more about the deal. We don’t have anything to say right now.

Hyundai stated, “The two companies are still in discussions, and no decisions have been made at this time.”
