• Toyota wants to start making an electric S.U.V.S.U.V. with three rows in the United States around 2025.
  • The company also wants to get 10 E.V.sE.V.s on the market around the world by 2026. The next generation of electric cars will have twice the range of the current ones.
  • During today’s press conference with several well-known executives, there were hints about a mysterious new Lexus EV.

Toyota’s efforts to make its lineup more electric are going above and beyond. At a press conference held today in Tokyo, the company’s top executives talked about the latest plan. It calls for ten new E.V.sE.V.s to be sold worldwide by 2026. In 2025, the United States will start making an electric S.U.V.S.U.V. with three rows.

Made in the U.SU.S.

Aside from the fact that the company’s upcoming E.V.E.V. S.U.V.S.U.V. will be made in the U.S.U.S.U.S.U.S. and have batteries made in North Carolina, no other details were given. It might look like the 2021 Toyota bZ5X prototype, which had three rows of seats. The bZ5X and many other Toyota and Lexus concepts were shown off while the companies said they would offer 30 electric vehicles by 2030.

Since then, Koji Sato has been the president and C.E.O.C.E.O. of Toyota. He took over from Akio Toyoda. Because of this, the automaker, criticized for being against E.V.sE.V.s in general, changed its mind. In February, Sato chose Lexus to lead the company’s new plans to put E.V.sE.V.s first.

Adding onto an electric range

The announcement also talked about the next-generation electric platform. Toyota Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakajima said today that the company plans to increase the range of its next-generation E.V.sE.V.s by four times. This is thought to happen in 2026. Even though Nakajima said it would be done “much more efficiently,” it wasn’t clear how the range would be doubled. The E.P.A.E.P.A. now says that the Toyota bZ4X has the most extended range, at 252 miles, while the Lexus RZ450e has the shortest range, at 220 miles. This means that the content of new models will be between 440 and 500 miles per charge.

The Lexus EV will be shown.

One of the slides in the presentation showed a mysterious electric Lexus model that should have been discussed during the talk. The side profile showed sharp corners, a sloping roofline, and a small Lexus logo above the rear wheel arch. It resembles a cross between a sedan, a hatchback, and a crossover.

Even if the new Lexus EV isn’t real, it will be built on a platform from the next generation. In the future, Nakajima’s new and exciting idea of letting drivers change the “riding experience” may be added. This is how people said what they liked and didn’t like about how the car drives, turns and stops. He said it was part of Toyota’s plan to “make cars that are both physically and digitally easier to drive.”
