Since the 2017 WRX came out, Subaru hasn’t made any cars with the STI badge, but don’t worry—this high-performance brand isn’t going away for good. Subaru says it is making an electric version of the top WRX, which could have a hybrid or battery-electric engine. This won’t be available until the current generation of WRX cars that run on gas is done. We might not see a new version of that type until the end of the decade.

 

So far, all of Subaru’s hybrid and electric car efforts have been linked to Toyota. The Crosstree plug-in hybrid employs Prius parts, and the Solera electric SUV is a Toyota bZ4X twin.. Because Toyota helped build Volterra’s platform, the e-Subaru Global Platform, Toyota and Subaru may work together again on the next version of the WRX and WRX STI.

Fitting a high-performance car like a WRX STI will require many changes because a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system should have at least 400 horsepower, about twice as much power as the most potent Solera. Also, the next WRX will be even more different from its Impreza roots, and we’d love to see the hatchback body style come back. Subaru will almost certainly make some special software for the WRX STI’s all-wheel-drive system, possibly with torque vectoring, to make it stand out from other dual-motor EVs.
