People only told a few people about the Mazda 6 when it left the US market in 2021. It was the perfect daily driver because it handled quickly, looked good, and didn’t come with many diesel or manual choices. There’s a chance it will go back to that, too, because Mazda’s patent applications show that they want to bring back EVs, along with a rear-wheel drive engine.

When Mazda applied for trademarks on the words “Mazda 6e” and “6e” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, they were referring to the electric car. Both are said to have something to do with “automobiles and their parts; electric cars and their parts,” which makes the meaning clear. Mazda has sent very detailed patents to the USPTO about how to build an electric car, but submissions have yet to be made at the same time.

In a trademark filing, there is a hint that the Mazda 6 will be coming back, but this time as an electric car

But be careful because filing for a trademark means something other than the goods will come out. Companies that make cars often buy the rights to names that they don’t plan to use. Besides that, there is little strong proof for an electric Mazda sedan, and it doesn’t look like there would be one in a market where crossovers are the norm. Even so, a group of diagonal data suggests that a Mazda 6 EV (or 6e) is possible.

Based on the systems already in use, Mazda should release its second attempt at an electric car in North America around 2025. The rumored return of the Mazda 6, built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture like its SUVs, fits in with that period. There were rumors that the car had been scrapped, but Best Car Web says that the development of the rear-drive six had only been put on hold. The rear-wheel-drive Mazda 6 will still not be coming back to the US market until 2025.

Of course, that rumor doesn’t mention an EV, so these lines don’t yet link. At this point, it doesn’t seem fair to think that Mazda’s beloved car will come back with any kind of drivetrain. When it finally does, let’s hope Mazda does a better job than it did with the lame MX-30.
