• Honda said in a press release about its relationship with Aston Martin in F1 racing that the deal allows the company to continue working toward carbon neutrality and improve its electric technology.
  • Starting in 2026, Formula 1 rules require that cars use only fuel that comes from renewable sources and that engines and electric motors produce the same amount of power.
  • Aston Martin says that the new rules will require close cooperation between the company that makes the frame and the company that makes the power unit.

Honda said it would leave Formula One racing in 2021 to focus on making electric cars for regular people, but it kept supplying power units to the Red Bull and AlphaTauri teams, which did very well. After Red Bull signed an engine deal with Ford for 2026, many people wondered what would happen to Honda if the company decided that racing wasn’t as important as it used to be. Even though people have changed their minds, Honda has found a chassis partner in Aston Martin that is ready to work with them.

At a press conference on May 23 in Tokyo, Honda said it would join the Formula One Championship in 2026 as a partner of the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula 1 team. The engine, motors, battery, and kinetic energy recovery system (ERS) are all parts of the advanced hybrid F1 gear that Honda will make.

It is essential to have no carbon footprint.

Honda’s interest in Formula One racing has been rekindled in part because the series wants to be carbon neutral by 2030, which is also one of Honda’s goals. Under the new F1 rules, the electric part of the power unit, which makes up 20% of the power output now, must be increased to 50%, and the combustion engines must use fuel that is good for the environment.

Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) will be in charge of making the engine units. When asked if the new program would require hiring more people or changing the present staff, Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation, said, “One of our goals in racing is to use it to help our young engineers grow.” We will get a lot of our resources from our efforts but also need to get some from outside sources.

Aston Martin is happy to have a partner developing a works engine instead of just getting finished power units from a supplier. On the other hand, Honda wants to make improvements that could be used in road vehicles. Martin Whit marsh, the Group CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies, says that the new limits will make merging much harder than with the hybrid units already in use. “An F1 power unit is more than just an internal combustion engine and a couple of turbochargers. There are both the ERS and the power pack. He thinks the plan should include how everything fits into the chassis from the beginning and that partnering with Honda will help the two companies build the close working relationship necessary for success. “We’re still a pretty young group.” We need to be respectful and listen to Honda.

“Both Honda and our new partner, the Aston Martin F1 Team, are honest and want to win,” said Toshihiro Mibe, the global CEO of Honda. “As of the 2026 season, we will work together as Aston Martin Aramco Honda and compete for the Championship title.”
