The Cadillac Lyriq is the second-oldest electric SUV in stores in the country, which could be a bad thing in the crowded EV market. But it’s not. The Cadillac Lyriq is going to have a great year and beat its expensive competitors while it does it, instead of being thrown away like a Shein garment that has only been worn once. General Motors just released sales figures for the first three months of 2024, and it shows that Cadillac sold 5,800 Lyrics. At first glance, that may not seem like a lot of cars if you’re used to hearing about deliveries from companies like Tesla or BYD. But let’s put it in perspective. That’s a 52% rise from Q4 2023 and a 500% rise from Q1 of the previous year. In addition, it’s a big part of the 9,155 Cadillacs that will be sold in 2023. Cadillac says that the 5,800 sales made up 17% of all the cars that were sold in the last quarter, making the brand’s name the second-best seller. However, that is not true, as it is only the third most popular car, after the XT5 (6,275 sales) and the Escalade (9,135). The meaning of a marque comes from Cadillac’s strange moving of the goalposts. Cadillac’s sales didn’t drop by more than 2.4% year over year, though, because it was the only model whose sales went up from the first quarter of the previous year. General Motors also says that Lyriq sold more than all of its competitors’ electric vehicles (EVs): Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Volvo. The way GM introduced the Lyriq may help explain why sales of the device have grown so quickly. Cadillac made about 8,200 units but hung on to 122 in 2022 to deal with problems caused by the SUV’s hasty development. It sounds a lot like the Chevrolet Blazer EV’s first appearance, but not as well known. Still, the Lyriq is reporting impressive numbers, which shows that the desire that has been holding back is still there. We still need to find out if this is the start of Cadillac’s comeback or just a fad like the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
