The INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster is a rebuilt pickup truck with the same ladder-frame solid chassis and 282-hp BMW inline-six engine as the company’s famous SUV. The Quartermaster won’t be sold in the United States, but when it comes out in the United Kingdom, it will cost the same as $86,797. INEOS also showed off a BMW-powered hydrogen fuel-cell prototype of their Grenadier SUV. The fuel cell is driven by hydrogen. With the Grenadier 4×4, the British chemical company INEOS is first entering the car market. The company wants to keep the uncompromising, hardworking style of the original Land Rover Defender. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the company showed off a new pickup truck called the Grenadier Quartermaster. It is a step up from its copy of the Defender. The ladder-frame chassis of the Quartermaster is 12 inches longer than that of the double-cab truck, which has the same basic design as the SUV. This extra length makes it possible for the bed to be 61.6 by 63.7 inches. The bed of the Quartermaster is almost the same length as the luggage box of the Chevy Colorado, but it is about 5 inches wider, which makes it easier to fit a standard European pallet. The 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine range is also used by this car. Besides the gasoline engine with 282 hp in Europe, there is also a diesel engine. Power is transferred using a traditional centre locking differential, a two-speed transfer case, and an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Front and rear differentials that electronically lock are available for an extra cost, and a multi-link suspension holds up the usual solid axles. The Quartermaster can haul the same amount of weight as the SUV. It has four tie-down hooks and a 400W power lift in the truck bed. With a wading depth of 31.5 inches and a ground clearance of 10.4 inches, the Quartermaster should be able to handle some rough territory. As choices, there will be a tonneau cover that can be locked, a roof rack, and a waterproof canvas canopy. Like SUVs, the Grenadier Quartermaster will come in three trim levels: basic with few features, off-road-focused Trialmaster, and luxurious Fieldmaster with all the bells and whistles. Orders are now being taken in the UK and Ireland, and the starting price, as of this writing, is $86,797. Since Grenadier 4×4 deliveries are scheduled to start at the end of 2023, INEOS has yet to say if the Quartermaster will be available in the US. Hydrogen-powered energy At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, INEOS also showed off a hydrogen-driven Grenadier prototype. INEOS says it will use the most modern hydrogen fuel-cell technology from BMW, the 395-hp iX5 engine with a range of about 300 miles per tank. The big bump on the hood of a hydrogen Grenadier, which is needed to fit the fuel cell, is the main thing that sets it apart from a regular Grenadier. INEOS says that this ugly protrusion would not be on a factory model. INEOS is committed to using fuels other than oil. CEO Lynn Calder said the company plans to release an all-electric car in 2026 and that hydrogen fuel-cell cars are best for longer trips. THE COMPANY MAY HAVE AN EDGE since INEOS already makes more than 400,000 tons of hydrogen every year. “Our demonstrator shows that the technology works, but now we need help from policymakers to build the infrastructure for the next generation of hydrogen vehicles,” Calder said. It needs to be made clear when INEOS plans to start selling cars that run on hydrogen.
