In the history of cars, the Jeep is one of the most well-known models. Also, Jeep has been making tough off-road SUVs for about 40 years under the Wrangler brand name. With its functional simplicity, doors that could be taken off, and top that could be taken off, the Wrangler had a winning formula that wasn’t matched for years until the Ford Bronco came back. Jeep would do anything to keep this one-of-a-kind recipe going. So, the brand’s first electric off-road car will not be the Wrangler but the new Recon.

The Wrangler, although its name emerged in the 1980s, embodies the very essence of Jeep’s DNA. The brand’s identity has been shaped by its association with the Wrangler, a connection that dates back to the end of WWII. Jeep’s loyal fan base, who understand and appreciate this heritage, are the ones the brand is catering to with its decision not to change the Wrangler.

Jeep says it won't make a Wrangler EV any time soon to "protect" the brand

“Well, Jeep is something we can’t miss.” At a recent event, Jeep CEO Bill Peffer told Invoice Pricing that the Wrangler or a variation of it brought the company into the market for the first time more than 80 years ago. “That’s why we defend it, right?” That’s how we protect our souls. Many loyal fans push the Wrangler.”

That doesn’t mean that adding electricity can’t help the Wrangler in any way. The Jeep Wrangler is not only a very popular model, but it also comes with a plug-in hybrid option. The 4xe Wrangler is indeed “the number one PHEV on the market,” as Peffer said. Why not make that into an only electric engine? Jeep, on the other hand, sees that very differently.

All-electric Wranglers have already been talked about and built by Jeep. Do you remember the Easter Jeep Safari themes? The first Wrangler Magneto was different from most cars because it had both a single electric motor and a six-speed manual gear. The newest model, Magneto 3.0, had 650 horsepower, a changeable air suspension, and a low range that could be chosen. So, it’s clear that Jeep is fully capable of making an electric Wrangler that will last. It’s not a good time to sell one to everyone.

Jeep’s decision to focus its electric technology on the Recon, a vehicle based on the Wrangler, is a strategic move. The Recon, with its removable doors and similar size to the Wrangler, shares a lot of its DNA with its predecessor. The main difference lies in the types of electric powertrains available, a clear indication of Jeep’s commitment to preserving the Wrangler’s essence while embracing the future of electric vehicles.

Not long from now, the Wagoneer S and Recon will be the best fully electric Jeeps you can buy. For now, the company wants to keep the Wrangler as close as possible to how it looked when it was first made.
