• Because of a problem with a suspension system that was made wrong, Kia is recalling 427,407 Telluride SUVs.
  • Some models are more likely to roll away while stopped, which raises the risk of an accident.
  • The recall affects all cars made from 2020 to 2023 and some from 2024. However, NHTSA records show that only 1% of the Tellurides will be affected.

Kia is recalling 427,407 Telluride SUVs due to a driveshaft issue that might allow parked cars to roll away. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given information that shows the recall is needed to fix a front right driveshaft that may only engage partly and an intermediate shaft that was made incorrectly. Doing this over and over again could damage the middle shaft splines, letting the car move while it’s in the Park. Kia says the problem has been reported 16 times, and 10 insurance claims have been made. In six of these cases, the carmaker confirmed that the cars had the right amount of wear or spline damage to be subject to the recall.

Kia is recalling 430,000 cars because they could roll away

The recall includes Tellurides made from January 9, 2019, to October 19, 2023, as well as some models from 2020 to 2023 and 2024. Records that Kia sent to the NHTSA show that they think only 1% of the cars that are being recalled will have problems. According to the NHTSA safety report, owners will know there is a problem when they hear grinding sounds or the power goes out.

The NHTSA says that the recall does not apply to Tellurides 2024 cars that were put into production on October 20, 2023, because the supplier tested the driveshaft assembly using “an additional computer vision process” to ensure that it was properly engaged.

People who own cars will get letters telling them to take their cars to a Kia store. The dealer will check the intermediate shaft and fix it if needed. Also, the automatic parking brake system will be made better so that the car doesn’t move by accident when it’s in parking or when the driver’s door is open and the car is stopped.

Distributors will be told about the recall on May 13, and owners will get letters about it by May 15. If an owner is worried, they can check the NHTSA recalls page ahead of time to see if their car is affected.
