• Kia is putting out a new device to keep its cars from being stolen, but it won’t work with the most recent security-focused software update it released last year.
  • Ignition cylinder safety is what keeps people from doing it.
  • Because of a TikTok craze in late 2021, several thefts from Kia and Hyundai cars led to the extra safety steps.

Kia is adding ignition cylinder protection to its most easily stolen cars to make them even less likely to be stolen. This comes after years of bad news, lawsuits, and probably a lot of problems with the popular Kia Boyz on TikTok. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all fix, and owners of troublesome types won’t be able to use it. Instead, it will be sent to people whose cars don’t work with the most recent security-related software update that the company released last year.

Kia releases a new theft deterrent for cars that can't get software updates

A free upgrade put by a dealer that went on sale on December 20 is meant to keep people from doing that. As part of its plans to improve the ignition cylinder body, Kia plans to add protection for the ignition cylinder. The maker says that this change should also stop thieves from using the TikTok trend to remove the ignition cover and cylinder guard.

A Kia press release says that window stickers will be put on all of the cars that get the change to let would-be thieves know about the answer. The latest fix can now be sent to models with an ignition system that works with a key. The Soul (2010–2021), the Sportage (2011–2016), the Sedona (2014), the Forte (2011–2016), and the Rio (2011–2021).

As an extra safety step, the company also put out a software update last year. The company says that by 2023, the software will be in more than 900,000 cars. Through a partnership with local police, the business is giving away free steering wheel locks to car drivers who can’t get the software update. Kia says that more than 325,000 locks have been sent out and that more will be sent out as needed.
