For a week, the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed has showcased nearly every racing era. For good measure, many oddities were added. It’s entertaining. This Land Rover Discovery 2 with a BMW M engine will win The Drive’s Goodwood Odd-Ball Best In Show award, which I’m making up. Mercy, Growling already. “What a stupid car,” “Two of the least reliable car companies ever,” etc. However, this could be better. Thus, why. First, this Land Rover wasn’t reliable, which is why so many people disliked it. Issues exist. A Lucas-electronics Discovery 1 became a Toyota Camry. The Land Rover Disco 2 was released near BMW’s exit. You can see why Land Rover struggled by visiting a few fan sites. Despite wanting a P38 Range Rover, I won’t even consider it. This Disco runs flawlessly with an M3 inline-six engine. This combines the finest of each. Off-road Disco 2s are animals. Ask anyone with one. A BMW S engine is thrilling to crank out when it doesn’t need new rod bearings, main bearings, VANOS solenoids, a time-consuming air filter change, etc. The engine is an S54, a potent, low-maintenance power plant. From my American perspective, an S50 would be even better because we have yet to receive one. It moves. This automobile should turn swiftly due to its aluminium body and low weight (solid axles, transmission, driveshafts, transfer case). It is caged and stripped down, with racing suspension. Those tires need to look more broad for track driving. Finally, it’s bizarre. It’s fast “I didn’t expect that to sound like that” music. It’s Disco 2’s. Goodwood’s Facebook and YouTube pages provide more run footage. I recommend a wild Friday night exploring everything.
