Ford has already shown a video of the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD being tested at Road Atlanta. Please stop what you’re doing and watch and listen to it because it sounds fantastic.

You can hear a boosted 5.2-liter V-8. The “Predator” engine in the old Shelby GT500 seems to have changed, even though it has new parts and a dry-sump oiling system. The eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle in the back gets 800 horsepower and 730 pound-feet of torque from a carbon-fiber driveshaft. The test car might or might not have the optional titanium Akrapovic exhaust, but it sounds great even if it doesn’t.

They aren’t very different from the GT500, but that’s fine. People could see that car for miles. A few years ago, when we were trying a track, we broke the rules about how loud it could be. This was done in a car with a license. The GTD is going to do similar things.

You can hear the supercharger whine from the front, but when the car goes by, all you can hear is the sound of the exhaust. The gears also changed quickly. That happened with the seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission in the GT500, and the eight-speed transaxle in the GTD is an improvement on the seven-speed.

The car looks to be moving quickly. Ford wants to finish the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes, and we think they can do it with all that power, those vast Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, and excellent handling. Let’s drive one at Road Atlanta.
