Mercedes-AMG is working on the development of an electric performance SUV entirely in-house. A sneak peek picture shows a sleek design with a low roof. The AMG SUV will be built on the AMG.EA platform, which is the same platform that will underpin the upcoming electric AMG performance sedan that was hinted at earlier this year. People used to think that the letters AMG meant loud V-8s and squeaky V-12s, but that’s starting to change. So, the newest Mercedes-AMG C63 sports car didn’t have a 4.0-liter V-8 engine. Instead, it had a hybrid drivetrain with a 2.0-liter inline-four engine and an electric motor. Using spy pictures and the Vision AMG concept car to show a sleek four-door car, Mercedes then said that AMG is working on its electric car. What’s even more different about AMG now is that it says it is making an SUV just for AMG for the first time. It will be electric, yes. Along with the AMG performance sedan, which was tried on a Swedish lake earlier this year, a new AMG SUV will be made on the AMG.EA electric platform. There was only one dark promo picture and no other details. The drawing shows the SUV’s swept-back shape, which has a low top and clear fenders. Michael Schiebe, CEO of AMG, calls the SUV a “high-performance off-roader,” but we think it will be more focused on speed on the road than on rock crawling. The model is called the “Born in Affalterbach” SUV by Mercedes to honor the city where AMG is based. No official name was given. When it comes to “emotion and performance,” Mercedes says, “AMG First, EV Second.” This SUV will be AMG’s sixth completely built car. The others are the famous SLS AMG with gullwing doors, two generations of the AMG GT, the most recent version of the SL, and the electric AMG sedan we already talked about. Mercedes says that the first test runs of the AMG SUV development prototypes will happen this winter. The cars will be mass-produced starting in 2027.
