• Mazda has revealed plans to develop a new four-cylinder engine, referred to as the Skyactiv-Z.
  • The new engine is planned to replace the Skyactiv-G models in the United States, with its launch scheduled for 2027.
  • Mazda states that the Skyactiv-Z will apply the Lambda 1 air-fuel ratio to improve emissions, and this approach will eventually apply to the brand’s six-cylinder engines as well.

Mazda keeps spending money on gasoline or diesel engines. The company says it is currently working on a new four-cylinder gas engine that will have the newest Skyactiv technology built in. The Skyactiv-Z will eventually replace the Skyactiv-X engines sold around the world and the Skyactiv-G engines sold in North America.

Mazda Is Designing On A New Four-Cylinder Engine Named Skyactiv-Z

A report from last week says that Mazda quietly shared some of the information in August during a presentation on its quarterly financial data. Mazda says that the new Skyactiv-Z engine will be much more fuel-efficient to meet stricter pollution rules, especially the CARB-approved LEV IV standards in the US. The Lambda 1 air-fuel ratio will be used. This helps lower emissions from the tailpipe at full power by keeping the mixture carefully adjusted across all rev ranges.

Mazda did not give any other technical details about the new engine with four cylinders. We are still determining how much power it will have and if it will be boosted. The company says it will be out in 2027, but we are still determining which types it will work with. Mazda wants to add Skyactiv-Z technology to its inline-six engine in the future.

It’s important to remember that the business is still making a new rotary engine. This was talked about when Mazda said earlier this year that it is working with Toyota and Subaru on next-generation engines. Mazda is making electric car systems with one or two wheels that spin. Even though there isn’t a set date for completion, Mazda says they are “making good progress.”
