Mazda is known for making inexpensive commuter cars that are good quality, stylish, and fun to drive. Its work with the gummy bear industrial complex in the early 1990s, which led to the Mazda 121 Goldy, has yet to be well known.

Only 1,000 unique Goldy versions were made for the European market and were meant to look like Haribo’s famous Goldbears candies. Each car had a Pop Yellow body and a set of Haribo bear wheel covers that were based on a well-known design by Ronal Urs. On the horn button of the Momo sports steering wheel was a picture of the Haribo mascot, and the back window shade had a design of gummi bears.

In addition to the car, the owners also got a Haribo stuffed bear and 100 packs of Haribo candies. The tops of the Goldy cars were also made of canvas, so on hot days, the tops could be left down. CocheVS.es says the vehicles were driven by a 16-valve Mazda B3 engine with 72 horsepower. It resembles the famous B6 engine used in the first Mazda Miata.

You probably need to learn more about the Mazda 121 because it was never sold in the United States. Its biggest markets were Japan, Australia, and Europe, where it was also known as the Autozam Revue. Mazda stopped making hatchbacks in its second generation and switched to making small sedans instead. Because it was round and blobby, it was quickly called the “Bubble” car. With a curb weight of only 1,800 pounds, it was meant to be a simple, cheap mode of transportation that could move quickly.

Hofele Design, a tuning business well-known for its work on high-end German cars, got the vehicles ready. Hofele’s background says that German media star Thomas Gottschalk, who has been in many Haribo commercials over the years, also helped push the cars. A North Rhine-Westphalian couple gave a Goldy to the Mazda Classic Automobile Museum Frey in Augsburg, Germany 2022.

The Mazda 121 Goldy is a relatively rare car because it was only made in small numbers. It’s not the most popular car on the market because it’s cheap, but it’s an exciting and fun part of Mazda’s past that can be accepted.
