• Automotive News says that McLaren plans to make a hybrid version of the P1 race car that will come out in 2026.
  • Estimates show that the hybrid system in McLaren’s future flagship car would be 70% lighter than the one in the Artura, which was just unveiled.
  • The article says that a four-seat McLaren will come out in 2028, and a hybrid version of the 750S will come out in 2026.

McLaren is working on a follow-up to the groundbreaking P1 hybrid supercar from 2013 (shown above). According to a new story in Automotive News, the company’s next flagship model will keep its hybrid powertrain instead of going all-electric.

Getting past the P1

This week, the next Ultimate Series car was announced at McLaren’s offices in Woking, England, during a conference for retailers worldwide. This showed that the company doesn’t want to focus too much on electric vehicles (EVs).

The new design will have a McLaren V-8 engine and a brand-new hybrid drivetrain. It will be a two-seater inspired by Formula 1. Automotive News talked to dealer sources who said that the battery and electric motor of the 671-hp Artura will be 70% lighter than the current hybrid setup. Authorities say the new system “makes much more horsepower and sends the power to the transmission more directly.”

The P1 replacement will reportedly be built on a new carbon fiber monocoque with integrated seatbacks, like a Formula 1 car. It will also have aerodynamics based on the world’s best open-wheel racing race. The conference also discussed the car’s doors’ unique shape and 3-D-printed suspension parts. The best McLaren is likely to come out in 2026.

Potential McLaren 4-Door

In the report, the British company that makes racing cars said that one of its goals for the future was to create a vehicle that could fit four people. Executives at McLaren are said to have hinted that “another class of car” with four doors and four seats will come out in 2028.

This confirms rumors from last year that McLaren was thinking about making a higher-riding car, but the company wouldn’t say if it would be called a crossover. Michael Leiters is the CEO of McLaren. Last year, he joined the company after working on the Porsche Cayenne and Ferrari Purosangue SUVs.

The article says that McLaren wants to sell the recently released Artura until at least 2030, but other models may be added in the future. The 720S, which had been on the market since 2017, was changed to work with the new 750S, which the company had just released.

Reports from conferences say that the 750S will be replaced in 2026 by a new electric car. This knowledge is essential to McLaren’s plan to make all their vehicles electric by that year. In the coming years, there should be more details about McLaren’s hybrid plans.
