• Mini launched the John Cooper Works Electric and the John Cooper Aceman for the first time.
  • The electric motors in both models are the same, making 255 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
  • It doesn’t look like either model will be for sale in the US any time soon.

Get together, fans of the hot hatch! Along with the John Cooper Works editions that run on gas, Mini has also released two electric performance models. The John Cooper Works team has made its first Mini-EVs the JCW Electric and JCW Aceman.

Mini Launches Its First-Ever John Cooper Works Electric Vehicle With 255 HP

Even though the Aceman doesn’t have the “EV” label, both hatchbacks use the same powertrain and are electric. The front wheels of both cars are powered by a single electric motor that makes 255 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. They also have a battery that can hold 54.2 kWh. Mini says that it takes the Aceman 6.4 seconds to go from 0 to 62 mph, while it only takes the standard John Cooper Works Electric 5.9 seconds.

A switch on the steering wheel turns on the Go-Kart mode in both cars, which adds 27 horsepower. That extra boost in power is needed to reach the top speed of 124 mph, and it can also be used to pass other cars. On Europe’s more optimistic WLTP cycle, Mini says the standard JCW can go 231 miles, and the Aceman can go 221 miles. The electric architecture fits with “the tradition and character of the MINI brand” in both models, according to Mini. They also get summer tires and a suspension made just for John Cooper Works.

Fans of hot hatches in North America will be disappointed to hear that neither of the John Cooper Works models will be sold on our continent. Not at first, at least. Mini plans to only make the cars in China until 2026, when they will start making them in the UK.
