It was only a matter of time before Lucid went after Tesla himself. Peter Rawlinson made Lucid. He was the head of engineering at Tesla and was in charge of the first Model S. Rawlinson plans to compete with his old company. He recently told Auto Express that Lucid will soon make cars similar to the Model 3 and Model Y. Lucid indeed needs to finish the all-electric Gravity SUV first. Rawlinson says it is being made and will come out in the second half of 2024. The brand’s first car was the Lucid Air sedan, but the Gravity was always meant to come after it. But Rawlinson will focus on the company’s two most popular models once the Gravity is finished and ready to buy. “After Gravity,” he told Auto Express, “we’re going to do a Model 3 and Model Y competition.” It will cost between $50,000 and $48,000. Even though it’s too early to know, that’s the plan. The Lucid’s motor and battery technology is the best in the business, so many EV fans would likely like it if it was cheaper. Because of low-cost cars, more people could use this technology. One of the companies Lucid is selling its motor, battery, and charging technologies to is Aston Martin, which is something Tesla should have done years ago. Rawlinson compares this to how almost every computer company gets a chip license from Intel. These deals will help Lucid get the money to make different kinds of cars. Lucid needs more sales to be profitable enough to make many new cars. With new ways to make money, a Model 3 fighter that costs $50,000 might be made sooner rather than later. Don’t expect Lucid to give you something cheaper than that, though. Rawlinson says that to be widely used, electric cars need to be cheap, especially if they cost less than $25,000. Even though he doesn’t think Lucid will be able to do it, he’d like to be the “Intel Inside” for low-cost EVs.
