Volkswagen Group’s technical development boss Kai Grünitz said that unless Euro 7 emissions rules change, the manual VW Golf will die by the time the new legislation is approved in 2025. Since 1975, the GTI, at least according to Autocar, has been offered with a manual transmission. Volkswagen claims that the manual transmission version of the Golf GTI generates just two extra grams of CO2 per kilometre than the automatic. Euro 7, however, is putting severe pressure on automakers to reduce pollution from cars’ tailpipes and particulate emissions from tires and brakes. As previously reported, Euro 7 must still be in its final form. There has been a protest against the laws as they currently stand from a collection of European countries, excluding VW’s own country of Germany. The eight nations are This being said, many nations in the coalition seek not to scrap Euro 7 altogether, only delay it. In that case, it’s just a matter of when, not if, the manual VW Golf will go away. Volkswagen wants to reduce the number of available vehicle options, therefore it’s unlikely that the manual GTI will remain on sale in the United States. For instance, it has already scrapped the regular Golf from its lineup to cut costs. As such, it hopes to phase out models like the Arteon that aren’t selling well in favour of larger cars and electrification. Euro 7 negotiations are still ongoing. We will know when the manual Golf will be put out to pasture once the regulations are finalised or until VW makes a formal decision.
