The Bow Tie brand’s most off-road capable midsize truck, the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, debuted less quickly after being revealed last month. The second-generation Bison, which improves on the Colorado ZR2’s already strong off-road skills, did not need an extravagant presentation, unique staging, or apparent effort. We went to GM’s test site to check out the new truck after Chevy asked us to. We found it in a low, grassy area next to an extra parking lot that needed a ditch. When we saw the new Colorado ZR2 Bison, the environment no longer mattered, at least in this way.

How to Stand Out from the Rest

The 2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison gets the same makeover as the all-new 2023 Colorado, which came before the current wave of Colorados. At first glance, it looks bigger and stronger than the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trail Hunter and the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor, which are its rivals. Chevy finally gives people what they want in a real off-road midsize truck: 17-inch AEV wheels that can be locked into place and 35-inch Goodyear tires. This is primarily because of how the wheels and tires are assembled. There needs to be more than the Ranger and Taco’s 33-inch tires.

Chevrolet seems to think it is so vital that it moved Colorado’s front axle 3.1 inches forward from the previous generation to make room for those rollers. (This change was made to all new-generation Colorados, but the longer wheelbase wasn’t just for looks; it made the ride much better.) The factory cuts off the back half of each front fender. This makes the track 66.3 inches long, 1 inch longer than the ZR2. AEV fender flares finish off the look.

Most cars with bigger tires have less suspension travel. Still, Chevy engineers made the Bison suspension so that the ZR2’s 9.9 inches of front suspension travel and 11.6 inches of rear suspension travel were kept, and the body was raised by 0.5 inches. Sources say that the ZR2’s turning circle has stayed the same. The 2024 Ranger Raptor has the same front travel of 10.0 inches and the same back travel of 11.5 inches as the Bison. The break-over angle of 26.9 degrees is the best in its class, and the bigger tires give it 12.2 inches of ground clearance, up from 10.7 inches on the Raptor. So, it might be better to have bigger tires.

Off-Road Improvements in a Nutshell

Chevrolet wanted to make it easier for people to buy, so a ZR2 Colorado with the Bison off-road package has all the appropriate off-road equipment. Extras only on the Bison include yellow seat belts, AEV-made underbody cams near the transmission that let you see the front or back of the truck, and lens-washer nozzles. The inside of an AEV can be made of cloth or leather with yellow stitching.

Like the other Colorado lineup, the Bison will only be offered as a four-door crew cab with a 5.1-foot bed and a new bed-mounted spare tire carrier with a full-size tire and matching wheel that keeps the extra as vertical and tucked as possible. AEV has put five skid plates made of boron steel on the radiator, steering gear, gas tank, differential, and transmission to protect them. Chevy also puts stamped-steel AEV bumpers on the front and back of the Bison. The front bumper can be used with a winch, and the left and right recovery holes on the back can pull the vehicle out of trouble. Compared to the normal ZR2, the ZR2 with the wider steel front bumper has an approach angle of 38.2 degrees instead of 38.6 degrees. The departure angle, on the other hand, goes from 25.2 degrees to 26.0 degrees. Rock sliders in the shape of tubes protect the cab.

Many tools can be used off-road.

In 2024, the ZR2 and Bison can use launch control in Baja mode. It is a flexible tool that works best in sandy or gravelly areas. Put the stop and throttle to the floor when told to. When the driver is ready to go, all they have to do is let go of the visit. The software that controls the engine will keep the initial launch rpm at the right level. After the first launch, the technology adjusts the speed of the machine and how much power it sends out. It is said to get better over time. Launch control is offered on both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive cars, and it turns off the stability and traction control up to 35 mph.

Do You Require One?

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison comes to the store after more than 12,000 miles of complex testing. It is based on Chad Hall’s 39 wins in Best of the Desert, Mint 400, and Legacy Racing Association races. The 35-inch tires set the Bison apart from its competitors, and Chevy’s hydraulic jounce bumpers are a new way to build a suspension until the GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition comes out. It is likely to be mechanically similar to it. Because of its unique features, the ZR2 Bison gives you the “best of both worlds” when getting into trouble in the desert and climbing rocks.

The Bison should go on sale in the fall of 2024, but the price has yet to be announced. The Bison may be more expensive since it is at the top of the Colorado Range and the ZR2 starts at USD 48,295. The MSRP for the Colorado ZR2 Bison is between $55,000 and $60,000. The 2024 Silverado HD ZR2 Bison, which is bigger than the ZR2, costs $6,000.
