• We think that Tesla will improve the Model 3 later this year.
  • On the inside, the Model 3 that has been changed is called “Project Highland.”
  • If this picture is any indication, the design of the new Model 3 is based on the Roadster prototype.

People know that Tesla is working on a better Model 3. The new entry-level electric car, known internally as Project Highland, is scheduled to come out later this year as a 2024 or 2023 model, even though Tesla is known for breaking model-year traditions.

Still, Tesla has kept vital information about the Model 3’s updates secret. Even though we don’t yet know what hardware and software updates Tesla plans to make to the new Model 3, we are now getting our first look at the car’s remade sheet metal. At least, that’s what we think is going on in this spy shot, which was posted first on Reddit and then on Twitter.

Whatever it is, the revised body lines of this rumored unmasked Model 3 prototype match those of Model 3s seen in the wild with camouflage. It could be the work of a good Photoshop artist or an idea for Project Highland that was never used. Note the crease in the door where it meets the side-mounted camera and flows into the fender. It’s a small detail that the Project Highland prototypes had but that the present Model 3 lacks.

The picture above shows the most noticeable changes to the front of the Model 3. Large headlight bezels and a big bend in the front fender cover are no longer on the current car. They have been replaced by headlights that look like slits and a straighter, simpler front lip. So, the front end of the Model 3 looks like the Roadster concept from 2017.

This picture shows little more than a new style of wheel. We’re sure that Tesla has improved the Model 3’s design as part of Project Highland. Still, we will know what changes have been made to the car’s adaptive safety features, infotainment system, and powertrain once the company officially unveils the updated sedan.
