• On the German racetrack Nürburgring, two prototype Chevrolet Corvette ZR1s were seen being tested.
  • Two ZR1s were seen. One had a big rear wing, and the other looked like it had the rear wing from the Z07 package on a Z06 model.
  • They’re on the ZR1, with many extra ducts on the sides and a big vent under the hood.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is a strong car, as our time with a scary gray version shows. It has a flat-plane-crank V-8 engine with 670 hp and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires. With the new ZR1 model, Chevrolet, on the other hand, wants to take its famous sports car even further. The bold styling of the ZR1 type can be seen in spy shots of two different high-performance Vette cars being tested on Germany’s Nürburgring.

The considerable wing is the first thing that stands out. The ZR1’s back wing isn’t as small as the Z06’s, but it has bigger endplates, a broader central plane, and taller struts, which make it even better. A second ZR1 prototype with the Z06’s smaller wing was seen on the Ring. Chevy might want to give two aero kits as it did with the Z06 and the ZR1 before it, or the company might look at different wing designs to see how the more significant part would affect aerodynamics.

They help make downforce with sharp splitters and strong dive planes up front, but they don’t look all that different from the Z06’s Z07 performance package parts. A big hole in the hood lets air flow up and over the cabin and toward the back wing. The front grilles have not changed much, though. The ZR1 doesn’t have a trunk like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS because of how deep the outlet looks.

You can still see the main triangle intake from the Z06, but a second, smaller intake has joined it. There is also an extra vent on the ZR1’s massive shoulders. Chevy has added more air vents to the sides of the ZR1. The ZR1’s back end looks much like the Z06’s, except for the big wing. While the ZR1’s wheels aren’t as fancy as those on lower-end Corvettes, they may be more significant than the Z06’s 20-inch and 21-inch stacked wheels.

The 5.5-liter V-8 in the Z06 will get two turbochargers when the ZR1 comes out in 2025. It will be bigger than the Z06, but it should still be able to reach 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds, thanks to more than 800 horsepower at the back wheels. Even though it’s not cheap, the price should start at $150,000, much less than similar supercars in Europe. The ZR1 may be the last Corvette with only internal combustion engines.
