• A test of Polestar’s new Polestar 5 sedan showed that it took less than 10 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.
  • The company says that the test car’s 77.0-kWh battery pack was charged at speeds that went from 310 kW at the beginning to more than 370 kW by the end.
  • Polestar says that the 77.0 kWh battery that was built just for them can be increased to at least 100.0 kWh.

The market for electric cars is still growing quickly, and car companies release new or improved models almost every other week. One such company is Polestar, which has tested the fast charging skills of a prototype Polestar 5 car in an amazing way.

Polestar 5 can be charged from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes

It only took ten minutes to charge the sample from 10% to 80%, which is less time than it takes to read through your Instagram feed. The test car had a 77.0-kWh battery from StoreDot, a company that makes batteries for electric vehicles. Although this is a small battery, Polestar thinks that Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology can be made to work with at least 100.0 kWh of power.

Along with speed, the test’s total charge rate is very good. Polestar says that charging started at 310 kW when the battery was at 10% and sped up to just over 370 kW when it hit 80%. Polestar didn’t include the test’s average charge rate, which is the information we would have liked to see.

Jens Groot, Polestar’s chief engineer for battery systems, said, “This is the first time a full battery pack has been tested in a fully functional car without (and this is important) showing the eventual power loss that is usually seen during charging.”

“This is evidence that we can now charge at these speeds in a standard car,” he said. There is new stuff in the battery pack that still needs to be added. “The original cooling fan and pump were still there.”

According to Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath, time is “one of life’s greatest luxuries.” The company is working on technology that will let drivers stop faster until it’s “more akin to what they encounter at the present time with a car that is powered by gasoline.

The Polestar 5 is set to come out in 2027 as a two-motor car with all-wheel drive as standard. According to the company, at least one Polestar 5 trim level should have 884 horsepower, which is a very impressive amount of power. We don’t yet know when and how much the future car will cost. The Polestar 5 probably won’t come out for a while since the Polestar 3 just came out and has a 2025 model year.
