Porsche has given hints that the 992.2-generation 911 GT2 RS will be out soon. The automaker has unveiled a new flagship model of the 911, promising to elevate standards even further within the sports-car segment. The 700-hp GT2 RS that came before it could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.6 seconds, so its speed should get even better. VIR’s Grand Course has been lapped by less than 10 cars in less than 2 minutes and 40 seconds over the past almost 20 years. With a time of 2:37.8, the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Weissach comes in fourth. Only the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, the 2019 McLaren Senna, and the 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS have ever been able to go around a track faster. Porsche is now giving hints that the 992.2-generation GT2 RS, the follow-up to the already amazing 2018, will be coming soon. Naturally aspirated engines that rev quickly have been used in Porsche’s GT3 models for a long time, but turbocharging is also used in the GT2 models. We don’t know much about the new GT2 RS because Porsche hasn’t given it the green light yet. The company did say in its most recent annual report that the 911 family will “welcome an additional flagship model.” That sounds like the new GT2 RS, which we think it is. The company behind Porsche says that its new top-of-the-line car will “raise the bar even further in the sports car segment.” With a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter flat-six engine making 700 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, the old GT2 RS was a lightweight track star. In 2.6 seconds, it went from 0 to 60 mph. The numbers show that Porsche’s theoretical barrier to entry into the sports car market is now closer to the surface than it was before. How can Porsche make their cars run faster? Power could come from the next model, the 992.2 911 Turbo, for the new GT2 RS. Last year, internal data showed that the Turbo cars would get a new 3.6-liter twin-turbo engine instead of their old 3.7-liter twin-turbocharged engines. The second one might use technology like the 3.6-liter T-hybrid engine in the new GTS. Porsche says that the hybrid GTS can go from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, even though it only has 532 horsepower. Adding a second engine to the Turbo version makes it run even faster. Even if something goes wrong, the next Porsche 911 GT2 RS should be a very fast car.
