Porsche recalled 24,467 Panameras made between 2017 and 2022 because a problem with the external coolant pump could cause a fire. Porsche says that humidity getting into the external coolant pump of the climate control system could cause a short circuit and thermal damage, which could lead to a fire. Because of the same problem, Bentley also recalls 650 of its 2020 Continental models. Porsche is calling back 24,467 Panameras from model years 2017 to 2022 to fix a problem with the external coolant pump that could cause a fire. Porsche told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that problems happen when the humidity gets into the external coolant pump of the climate control system. This has the potential to cause a short circuit in addition to the damage caused by heat. Porsche says it doesn’t happen often, but if the thermal damage is missed, it could cause a fire in the car. Nearly 25,000 Panameras from different model years are being called back. This includes base models with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, as well as GTS and Turbo models. Porsche says that dealers won’t charge anything to fix the affected cars. If the pump and the plug-in connection are broken, the dealer will replace both. Bentley said in a separate NHTSA filing that it would call back 650 2020 Continental GT and GTC cars because of the same problem. The company agrees that the hardware will need to be replaced to fix the problem, but they also say that a complete solution is still being looked into and will be shared with the NHTSA once it is found. In its NHTSA submission, Bentley also said that production of a new pump from a new supplier started in July 2019. Since the new pump has a seal that keeps liquid from building up, cars made after that date should not be affected. In March, owners of Bentley and Porsche cars will be told about the recall. In the meantime, they can go to the NHTSA recalls page to learn more about the memory and find out if their vehicle is affected.
