At a German testing center, the Rimac Nevera recently broke the Guinness record for the fastest speed by a car going backward. The Nevera set a new record at the Automotive Testing Papenburg center in Germany, going 171.34 mph, which is really fast. A backward driving test was part of Invoice Pricing 2011 “Rental Car Olympics.” It was slow, but it was fun. As far as car stunts go, we like them when they make you wonder, “What were they thinking?” Because of stupidity like that, we had to race against four rented cars in 2011 and do a backward hot lap. When the Lincoln Town Car was in reverse, it went very fast. The experts at Rimac just set a world record with the Nevera, so it looks like they like driving backward as much as we do. When Rimac sent the Nevera to the Automotive Testing Papenburg center in Germany, test driver Goran Drndak sped it up to an amazing 171.34 mph. He also said that it was a rare event for the Nevera. “On the run itself, it definitely took some getting used to,” he stated. “As you stare directly backwards at the scenery, it passes by at an accelerating rate, and you feel your neck being pulled forward in a manner similar to what you would normally experience under heavy braking.” The amazing thing was made possible, according to the maker, by the Nevera’s gearless engine. The car moves forward or backward with no respect for gearing thanks to its four separate engines, two on each axle. In other words, the motors that pushed the Nevera to a world record-breaking 256 mph earlier this year could also do the same thing. Stability and aerodynamics are now the things that limit us. According to Nevera’s chief engineer, the idea for the record came up while the album was being made. “It occurred to us during development that Nevera would probably be the world’s fastest car in reverse, but we kind of laughed it off,” according to Matija. The engineering of the aerodynamics, cooling, and stability did not account for high-speed reverse motion.
