If you doubted Rivian’s off-road abilities, the R1S electric SUV has crossed the Rubicon Trail, the “granddaddy of all rock crawling trails” for 4×4 enthusiasts and over landers. Rivian claims the R1S is the first mass-produced EV to cross the Rubicon. Secret SUV GMC Hummer EV. You are next.

Rivian’s test and development crew drove the Quad-Motor Rivian R1S across Loon Lake on August 7. Wednesday, August 9, late afternoon, it arrived in Tahoma. On its initial tour, the R1S was joined by two unmade R1Ts and a modified Jeep Wrangler. (The Rubicon must include the Jeep Wrangler, right?)

Despite your interest, the Rivian continued on the road. Rivian claims that the R1S electric SUV used roughly 75% of the 135 kWh battery pack’s energy from 80% to 10%. The most astonishing part was its 12-mile length. Off-roading and rock excavating take a lot of gas, like ICE-powered vehicles.

The Rivian R1S was standard except for steel rock sliders, front tow hitch receivers, and a roof rack with a spare tire and rescue supplies. It even had 34-inch Pirelli all-terrain tires. All these modifications weighed the 7,000-pound electric SUV. But the Rivian crew admitted to bruises and scratches after a hard-fought skirmish. They made bodily injury seem good. Rivian reported no tire issues or modifications. Rivian should quit saying “kiss.”

How do you finish the Rubicon Trail? There are long and short replies. From the short answer, Rivian. Oh, how things have changed.
