The 2023 Toyota Tundra removed the V-8 engine and switched from a leaf-spring rear suspension to a coil-spring rear suspension. After Ram 1500, Toyota is the only other big truck company that does this with its full-size pickups. Leaf springs come standard on all F-150s, but coil springs can be added to the F-150 Raptor.

If you want to know what this change to the suspension means in terms of design, ride, and handling, this suspension test video tells you everything in a very nerdy way. The Ramp Travel Index test used in the video shows how flexible the TRD Pro’s suspension is and how it compares to other off-road trucks.

During our deep dive into the suspension, we discovered that there had been changes to more than just the rear suspension. Among other things, the front suspension has more red paint and stronger anti-roll bar mounts. The benefits of the rear coil-spring break are also brought up, especially how it makes the ride more comfortable.

Even so, it’s clear that the TRD Pro has yet to put as much money into its off-road capabilities as the F-150 Raptor or Ram TRX, which are more expensive. For example, neither its all-terrain tires nor its rear shocks are turned around at the factory to reduce the weight of the parts that don’t move. The TRD Pro has a lower RTI rating than other off-road supercars.
