• Tesla has discreetly introduced a new rear-drive version of the Model Y compact SUV to its U.S. lineup.
  • The EPA says it can go 357 miles on a full charge, which is 30 miles farther than the dual-motor version.
  • The initial deliveries of the new model are expected to begin within three to five weeks, with pricing starting at $46,630 before any applicable discounts.

The Tesla Model Y’s price has gone down a little. The car company added a new rear-drive Model Y compact electric SUV to its range in the United States.

Tesla Introduces Rear-Drive Model Y Starting At $46,630

We can only guess because Tesla’s customer website doesn’t have information on the powertrain, but we’re sure that the rear-drive type has a single electric motor connected to the back axle. The horsepower number for the new model is not given, which is also the case for the Long Range AWD and Launch Edition versions of the updated Model Y. It’s not a surprise that the single-motor Model Y isn’t as good at sprinting as the dual-motor version, even though we don’t know the exact horsepower numbers. The AWD Y accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, whereas the new model takes 5.4 seconds to achieve the same speed.

Just like the engine, not much is known about the battery. According to Tesla, the rear-wheel-drive model offers a range of 357 miles, 30 miles more than the dual-motor version. If the optional 20-inch wheels are used instead of the regular 19-inch wheels, the expected range drops to 344 miles. Tesla states that a quick 15-minute supercharge can provide up to 182 miles of additional driving range.

The Model Y with rear-wheel drive starts at $46,630, which is $4,000 less than the Long Range AWD version. This is before tax credits are applied. Tesla’s customer website says that delivery of the new model should take three to five weeks and that orders are now being taken.
