• The 2024 Acura ZDX, a mid-size SUV powered by GM’s Ultium battery technology, will be the company’s first electric car.
  • The ZDX will have rear- or all-wheel drive, an EPA-estimated 325-mile range, and a 500-horsepower Type S option for speed freaks.
  • The 2024 Type S will cost over $70,000, and the ZDX roughly $60,000. Both automobiles will be sold in early 2019.

The Acura ZDX 2024 rethinks “Precision Crafted Performance.” The new midsize SUV’s electric motor is a massive change from the internal combustion engines of decades past, but the Type S variant should thrill Acura enthusiasts who prefer driving fast cars.

Acura’s first electric automobile

Here is a quick recap of today’s ZDX debut. Since 2009’s SUV-like coupe, Acura’s first electric car has revitalized the brand. The Precision EV proposal from last year shows how the 2024 ZDX will look when produced.

The Cadillac Lyriq and GM Ultium share this Acura’s scalable battery base. The ZDX shares the Caddy’s 121.8-inch wheelbase. The Acura is higher and slimmer at 64.4 and 77.0 inches. It’s also longer. It measures 197.7 inches from head to tail.

With the latest Acura “Jewel Eye” LED headlights and a pentagonal fake grille with a three-dimensional embossed surface and illuminated outline, the ZDX stands out. The sleek Type S’s “floating” roof design stands out in the new Double Apex Blue Pearl colour. The Tiger Eye Pearl comes in gold. The Type S sports 22-inch wheels, and the A-Spec 20-inch wheels. Two small tail lights complete the rear.

Type S and A-Specification Models

A single motor drives the back wheels, or two motors drive all four wheels in the ZDX. The rear-drive A-Spec has 340 horsepower. Acura has an all-wheel-drive model with unknown power. However, the ZDX Type S has two precisely tuned twin motors that offer each wheel 500 horsepower. Both engines can pull 3500 pounds.

A DC fast charger can charge each ZDX’s 102.0 kWh battery pack at 190 kW. Acura claims that connecting this link gives the single-motor A-Spec 81 miles more range in 10 minutes. The EPA estimates a similar car’s range at 325 miles per charge (315 with all-wheel drive). Type S should go 288 miles.

Fully independent suspension on each ZDX. The A-Spec uses coil springs, while the Type S includes adjustable dampers and airbags to vary ride height. Hi-po ZDX brakes have also been enhanced. Brembo six-piston callipers hold the 15.6-inch front rotors. Acura gives the electric Type S summer tires that are more stable to highlight its sportiness.

Inside the ZDX

The ZDX’s interior resembles other Acuras. The dashboard and door trim match and many soft sections feature contrast stitching. The central console contains a flat storage tray, a drink holder, and a wireless phone charger. Under the top piece, purses and handbags can fit.

We’re delighted Acura didn’t go all-touch-only because the HVAC system includes buttons and knobs, and the radio has a volume knob. Every ZDX has an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. Standard is an 11.0-inch digital gauge panel and an 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Android-based infotainment includes Google’s voice recognition, navigation, and app shop.

Besides essential driver-aid functions, the ZDX has rear cross-traffic braking and a back pedestrian alert. Acura Watch 360+, GM’s hands-free driving technology Super Cruise, debuts. It allows the ZDX to nearly drive itself on over 400,000 US and Canadian mapped highways.

The 2024 Acura ZDX A-Spec costs around $60,000. The sportier Type S costs $70,000. Pre-orders will begin later this year, but buyers won’t receive their goods until early 2024. Acura says dealers will still be involved in every ZDX sale, but online and from home or a store.
