The 5-series BMW is now an electric car. The 8th generation of the vehicle between the 3-series and the 7-series will now have a fully electric version called the 2024 BMW i5.

The method is similar to that of the 4-series and i4, as well as the newest 7-series and i7 models, in which both gas-powered, and battery-powered versions can be built on the same base.

The new 7-series, which has a more traditional look, is smaller in every meaningful way than the 5. The overall length is 3.9 inches longer, the wheelbase is 0.8 inches longer at 117.9 inches, and it is 1.3 inches wider and 1.4 inches high. The dash-to-axle relation, or the distance between the bottom of the windshield and the front tire, is essential because the hood goes a long way forward. Even though it has the BMW “big-nose” grille, it isn’t as wide as the one on the 7-series and doesn’t have the “bucktooth smile” that is on the 4-series and M3/M4.

Five fives all together

This fall, people in the US can choose from five different 5-series cars. All of them will have automatic transmissions. The least expensive type will be the 530i, which will have all-wheel drive and BMW’s well-known 255-hp 2.0-liter turbo four. BMW says that the model with rear-wheel drive can hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, and the model with all-wheel drive can do it in 5.8 seconds. The four-cylinder cars will start at $58,895 on sale in October, while the 530i drive will start at $61,195.

The 540i drive with six cylinders is the most potent gas-powered car. When the 48-volt mild hybrid system is turned on, the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine can make up to 375 horsepower, up from 335, and up to 384 pound-feet of torque. BMW says it will go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. It will be the last 5 with a gas engine when it goes on sale in November.

5s Dual Electric

People who want a 5-series that runs on batteries will have two options, neither of which will have a trunk under the long hood. The electric five will be called the i5, like the i4 and i7 before. The i5 eDrive40 is the weakest EV in the range. It has 335 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. With the Sport Boost option, the torque can go up to 317 pound-feet.

With an 84.3-kWh battery, the EPA says that the 4100-pound car can go about 300 miles. BMW says it will take 5.7 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. The price starts at $67,795, more than the $55,000 limit that the Inflation Reduction Act set for a tax refund. The extra M Sport package has a new suspension, new wheels, a more aggressive front and back end, and metal trim that has been blacked out.

The i5 M60 drive, with its two electric motors and 590 ph., will be the most potent 5-series (at least until the next M5). It will replace the V-8-powered M550i from the previous generation. The price starts at $85,095.

It is also interesting that C/D says it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and its curb weight is about 5300 pounds. BMW also ensures that the power doesn’t go down as the car’s top speed goes up, which is 143 mph on summer tires and 130 mph on winter tires.

Pull the Boost paddle behind the steering wheel to prepare the horses for a fast run. The most movement will happen if you hold it for 0.8 seconds. In addition to the acceleration, the car plays its Sports soundtrack, which adds to the drama.

The M60 has the same 84.3 kWh battery as the i5 eDrive40, which gives it a range of 256 miles. For people worried about their content, the i5 EVs have an option called “MAX Range.” This option is supposed to make the most of the battery’s excess charge by limiting the top speed to 56 mph and turning off the climate control, heated and cooled seats, and even the heated steering wheel. The 400-volt design lets you quickly charge up to 205 kW DC and 11 kW on a Level 2 port.

The i5 comes with Aircon sole video games that use your phone as a controller and a 12.3-inch centre display to keep you busy while you wait for a charge. If you don’t want to play video games, you can use the built-in YouTube app to watch Car and Driver’s YouTube account. If you like it, please like and subscribe to it.

Driving Assistant Professional is the name of the equipment that helps drivers in BMWs. This system has Active Lane Change Assistant, a marketer’s way of saying it will change lanes to avoid slower traffic. GM’s Super Cruise system does the same thing, but the driver still has to hold on to the steering wheel while “drives” the 5-series. But the BMW system won’t suggest until the driver’s attention is drawn to the mirror in question.

The new platform has a back suspension with air springs and a double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs. Adaptive springs, active anti-roll bars, and four-wheel steering are all options that you can choose to use or not. We will be able to test drive the new 5-series late September. We will only be able to tell you how BMW has changed the hardware or how the new five moves.
