Volvo’s first EV is the 2024 EX90. Volvo calls the three-row EX90 its flagship SUV. In early 2024, the EX90 will hit U.S. showrooms at a price under $80,000. Automotive News reports a Volvo EX90 production delay. Software development issues as Volvo prepares the new electric platform delayed U.S. delivery until the third quarter of 2024. Volvo claims that its current portfolio is entirely electrified, meaning every powertrain—even gas-engine ones—has a battery-electric component. The brand wants to sell entirely battery-electric EVs by 2030. Volvo offers two electrics, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, both based on existing architecture. The all-new EX90 is Volvo’s first EV. New EV Architecture A dual-motor powertrain will drive all four wheels at launch. The regular version’s two permanent-magnet motors generate 402 horsepower and 568 pound-feet. Brakes are 15.7/15.4 inches front/rear, and the chassis incorporates air springs. The turning circle is 38.7 feet, a foot tighter than the XC90’s. The 400-volt EX90 has a 107.0 kWh battery with a 300-mile range. A 250.0-kWh connection charges the EX90 from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes. The automobile will have Plug and Charge for automatic charging station payments. Safety Challenges The EX90 is “safer than any Volvo car before it.” Safety comes in many forms. A steering-wheel sensor and two cameras monitor the driver’s attention. The system can stop the car at the roadside and put on the danger lights if the driver is unconscious. Radar detects children and pets left in cars. If the system detects a child or pet, it can show a reminder, prevent you from locking the doors, and run the climate control system to keep you comfortable. Volvo’s Pilot Assist technology includes lane-change features. The EX90 also supports “unsupervised driving.” EX90 Style The EX90’s appearance is more SUV-like than the Concept Recharge’s wagon-like, lower-roof profile. The EX90 has similar dimensions to the XC90. The wheelbase remains 117.5 inches, while the length increases by three inches to 198.3. The EX90 is 77.3 inches wide and 68.8 inches low. Interior Redesign The Volvo EX90 shares its cabin with the Polestar 3. The simple dashboard’s wide, vertical touchscreen controls most tasks. The driver’s digital instrument cluster displays speed, range, and a car and traffic graphic. EX90 Price and Arrival The Polestar 3 and EX90 will be assembled in Ridgeville, South Carolina, for the U.S. market in early 2024. Customers can pre-order their autos now and complete their EX90 spec in fall 2023. Volvo merely says it will be “well equipped at under $80,000.” The EX90 can be purchased, leased, or subscribed to through Care by Volvo. Before replacing the XC90, the vehicle will be sold at the top of the Swedish brand’s list. Volvo aims to launch one new electric car per year, possibly a small SUV, starting with the EX90.
