• The seventh version of the BMW M5 has been released, and it is the first time that the top-of-the-line M car has a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
  • The 4.4-liter V-8 engine is twin-turbocharged and paired with a 194-hp electric motor. Together, they make 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.
  • The new M5 has a lot more power than the old one because it weighs 5390 pounds. The price is $120,675 at first.

One thing that stands out about the new BMW M5 is how heavy it is. There is no way around it, even though the famous sports sedan’s numbers are out of this world. The first change is that the flagship M car is now bigger. The M5 is 2.1 inches taller, 2.7 inches wider, and 1.2 inches longer than the M5 Competition that came before it. The wheelbase has grown by 0.9 inches as well. Then there’s the extra stress. BMW says that the 2025 model weighs an amazing 5,390 pounds. That’s 1153 pounds more than the last model, and it weighs more than the all-electric 2024 i5 M60 xDrive car.

The 2025 BMW M5 will have a Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain with 717 HP

With technology that plugs in now

The M5 has many new features as it enters its seventh version. The car still has a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, but it is now paired with a constantly excited synchronous electric motor, giving it a total of 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. This is a lot more power than the M5 CS, which has 627 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.

It has a 194-horsepower electric motor and a 14.8 kWh lithium-ion battery hidden under the floor of the eight-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor has more torque now than before because the launch control system has been briefly pre-geared.

Because the e-motor has a lot of power, BMW’s claimed 3.4-second time from 0 to 60 mph seems low. With the extra BMW Driver’s package, the company says the top speed is 190 mph. Without it, it just says 155 mph.

Management by Individuals

Customization is a big part of the M5’s engine. The M5 has five driving modes: hybrid, which is the standard mode; electric (which can go up to 87 mph and cover about 25 miles); and the control mode, which saves battery life. You can only get the Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes with the extra M Drive Professional plan. They are designed to be used on tracks.

Drivers can change the throttle mapping, gearbox, chassis, steering, and brakes, as well as the drive modes. There are also three levels of shift aggression. You can split power between the front and back axles, another way to change the all-wheel-drive system. The new boost control feature can be used by moving the shift button on the left side of the car between 20 and 90 mph. This turns on the chassis and engine systems’ most sporty settings.

There are more cross-bracings under the hood of the new M5, and the suspension mounts and body structure are better. In the new M suspension, each wheel gets damping forces from steel springs and changeable dampers with valves that are controlled by electromagnetic fields. The new M5 has four-wheel steering, which makes it more maneuverable on the racetrack and makes it easier for the big car to turn at low speeds.

To stop, either a big set of regular brakes or an extra set of carbon ceramic brakes are used. In the back of each axle are single-piston floating calipers, and in the front are six-piston fixed brakes. Not only do carbon ceramic brake pads stop your car more quickly and effectively, but they also weigh about 55 pounds less than regular brake pads. The wheels on the old car were all 20 inches, but now the front wheels are 20 inches, and the back wheels are 21 inches. The M5’s track width has grown by 0.4 inches.

Bright New Look

The new M5 looks more aggressive than the regular 5-series, which is not a surprise since it has carbon-fiber channels that stick out behind the reworked kidney grille. The doors on the M5 are 3.0 inches wider in the front and 1.9 inches wider in the back than those on earlier models. The four exhaust tips that stick out through the diffuser also draw attention to the back of the car. There is only one solid color and nine metallic colors in BMW’s “BMW Individual” paint color range, though you can pay more for one of them.

The inside of the M5 is like the inside of any other 5-series car, but there is a lot more carbon fiber. The new M leather steering wheel has three spokes and a flat bottom. There is a red sign in the middle at noon. There have been small changes to both the paddle shifters behind the wheel and the customizable M buttons. Like other new M cars, the center console control screen has buttons that can be used to set the DSC permanently.

The M5 will be shown to the public for the first time around the world at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. After being made in October, it will be sold all over the world in November. Price estimates for the seventh-generation car start at $120,675, which is about $9K more than the base price of a 2023 M5.
