We don’t usually make marketing choices for cars, but we were surprised to find that the 2025 Mazda CX-70, a mid-size SUV, is almost the same size as the CX-90. It should be somewhere between the bigger, three-row CX-90 and the smaller, two-row CX-50. Oh. Mazda made that choice, even though it looks like a stand-alone model rather than an option. We’re just reporting on it.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 are very similar

We liked the CX-90, which was good news for Mazda. The CX-70’s interior looks nice, with soft leather and patterned metal. The CX-70 is different from the CX-90 because its wheels have a unique design, and its grille, mirrors, door handles, and trim pieces are all blacked out.

The red Nappa leather, which is for the 100th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5, is a great way to show off your Mazda pride. Mazda wants you to know that the CX-70 and Miata are connected, even though they park in different spots. When we talk about extra space, the second row has plenty of headroom and legroom when you move from the front. This is true even with the panoramic sunroof. There is a huge space for bags behind the second row, as well as a hidden storage box under the floor. Mazda didn’t give numbers, but the CX-70 should have 40 cubic feet of space behind the second row of seats and 75 cubic feet of space when the seats are folded down. One of three possible powertrains, like the ones in the CX-90, will fit under the hood. There will be a 48-volt hybrid system and a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine with 280 and 340 horsepower, respectively, for the CX-70. There will also be a plug-in hybrid with a 2.5-liter fuel engine and an electric motor that makes a total of 323 horsepower. All three of them have an eight-speed automatic gearbox and only all-wheel drive.

There is a 12.3-inch tablet display and a full-color digital dashboard inside the CX-70, which looks like the inside of the CX-90. A touchscreen does not manage it but buttons and a rotary knob on the center console. This means you don’t have to worry about getting to the screen. For the first time, Mazda now works with Amazon Alexa in addition to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. “Unresponsive Driver Support,” which is another new piece of software, will stop the car if the driver doesn’t pay attention to the warnings.

Because Mazda reps said that the CX-90’s many trim levels made it hard for buyers to choose, we don’t think the CX-70 will have eight different ones. Mazda will offer five or more higher-level models, each with a higher starting price. In the spring of 2024, the CX-70 will go on sale for people who don’t want to fold down the third row of seats in a CX-90.
