• The McLaren Artura Spider 2025 has a retractable roof and a lot of other changes to the range.
  • The hybrid V-6 engine now makes 690 horsepower, which is 19 horsepower more than the last model.
  • The 2025 Artura car and Spider will start to be delivered in the middle of the year.

The McLaren Artura was shown off in 2021, but it didn’t go on sale in the US until last year because of problems with quality control. McLaren showed off a number of changes today, including the 2025 Artura Spider, which has better handling, more power, and a hardtop that can be folded down. The same improvements have been made to the 2025 Artura car, except that the roof can be taken off.

The 2025 McLaren Artura Spider is a high-tech droptop car with a 690-HP Hybrid V-6 engine

Performance that’s too hard

The Spider is McLaren’s first hybrid convertible. It has an electric motor and a 3.0-liter V-6 engine that was first used in the car last year. It can now make 690 horsepower for the back wheels, 19 more horsepower than the 2024 model. The car still has a peak torque of 531 pound-feet, but McLaren says that new engine programming has made it easier to deliver power. The internal combustion engine gives the car the rest of its power, while the axial-flux electric motor makes 94 horsepower.

The eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle with an electric motor stays connected to the hybrid system. A new “pre-fill” feature has been added to the gearbox for 2025 to cut shift times by 25%. This is done by raising the pressure of the hydraulic fluid inside the gearbox to the right level. This lets the gearbox shift right away when asked to. Power is sent to the transmission’s back wheels by an electrically controlled differential.

McLaren says the Artura Spider can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and from 0 to 124 mph in 8.4 ticks. Electronics stop the car from going faster than 205 mph. Launch control is one of the new features added to the Artura in 2025. Another is “Spinning Wheel Pull-Away.” For this method to work, the stability control must be turned off because it lets the wheels spin out of control when starting to speed up. It’s a cool way to show off as you leave the Pebble Beach Auto Show.

McLaren says the new mounts will make it easier to control the powertrain inside the chassis, which will make the car more stable, easier to move, and easier to handle overall. The handling should get better as a result. McLaren also changed the valving of the dampers, which made the car up to 90% more sensitive. People who drive can still choose between three styles of handling: comfort, sport, and track. You can still change how much the steadiness control works.

More changes to the hardware

In 2025, the Artura will get new cooling vents and carbon-ceramic brake rotors, along with lighter aluminum calipers. With a new ABS, McLaren says the Artura can now stop from 62 mph in just 102 feet. In our tests, it took an Artura car from 2023 141 feet and 279 feet to stop from 70 mph and 100 mph, respectively. We’ll have to wait and see if the new stoppers help the 2025 model when we get the chance to test it.

McLaren says that a reworked valved exhaust system with a tuned resonator makes the engine sound and perform better. McLaren says that adding an upward conical exhaust makes the sound “cleaner” in the middle and high rpm bands. A composer is used in an optional sports exhaust system to bring “authentic sound waves” into the car.

In real life, the lithium-ion battery pack has been more efficient while still having a 7.4 kWh usable capacity. The EPA-rated range stays at 11 miles, but McLaren says they were able to squeeze out a few more miles, making the range up to 21 miles. There are different wheel choices in a new gold color, and the 2025 Artura also comes with a standard 15-spoke silver wheel design.

A changed style

The Spider and coupe look almost the same, except for the electrically controlled roof that folds down in less than 11 seconds thanks to eight electric motors. McLaren does offer electrochromic glass that can be turned from opaque (blocking 99 percent of sunlight) to clear with the touch of a button, but the normal hardtop is still made of carbon-fiber composite panels. The key can be used to open and close the roof from the outside when the car is stopped.

For the droptop, new buttresses were needed. Some of them are made of clear plastic, which lets air into the engine bay and makes it easier to see out the back. A heated back screen can be raised and lowered with a button to make the car more comfortable when the roof is down or to improve the sound of the V-6 engine when the roof is up. Because the top and tonneau cover can be folded back, McLaren had to move the air vents for the engine further back. These openings had holes for cooling the engine and storage on the roof, as well as holes for letting hot air out.

McLaren says that the Spider weighs only 136 pounds more than the car, even with the extra gear needed for the foldaway roof. The Spider has a dry curb weight of 3212 pounds. The company says that the Spider is just as stiff as the coupe because it is built on a carbon-fiber monocoque and the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture.

Find out more about the new Artura

The Spider’s interior is the same as the car model’s. There is a small screen with important driving information in front of a simple steering wheel that doesn’t have any buttons. McLaren says that bolstered Clubsport bucket seats will come standard in most areas. However, heated, electrically adjustable comfort seats with a memory function will be free of charge.

All Artura models now come with traffic sign recognition and lane exit warning, and wireless charging is now an option. There are also adaptive cruise control, blind-spot tracking, and rear cross-traffic detection. There is also a faster front-end lift for the vehicle and new carbon-fiber trim choices.

People can now place orders for the 2025 McLaren Artura Spider and coupe. The cars should arrive in the middle of the year. The 2025 Artura Spider costs at least $281,008, and the 2025 Artura Coupe costs at least $256,308. If you own a car from 2023 or 2024, you can get better engine performance for free by calling your local McLaren store.
