• This is the first full-size pickup truck of its kind: the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger. It runs on electricity. It’s built on the same frame as the electric Ram 1500 REV.
  • There is a backup generator powered by a V-6 engine and a 70.8-kWh battery that gives the all-wheel-drive drivetrain its power. The battery has an estimated 145-mile electric range.
  • Ram thinks that with a full tank of gas and battery, the car will be able to go up to 690 miles. It has the power to pull 14,000 pounds and carry 2,625 pounds.

Electric trucks have a lot of torque and efficiency, and they also cut down on gas station trips. When EV trucks have to pull a big thing or carry a heavy load, their range and efficiency go down, and the owners’ stress levels go through the roof. Ram thinks it has the answer for people who want a full-size truck that has the best features of both gas-powered and electric power. The new Ramcharger plug-in hybrid is now on the market.

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger makes electric trucks less worried about their range

An electric hybrid car

In a way, the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger acts as a link between the updated gas-powered Ram 1500 and the soon-to-be-released electric Ram 1500 REV. The new Ramcharger is a plug-in hybrid, but it’s not like other new PHEVs. It’s named after Dodge’s huge body-on-frame SUV that was made in the US from 1974 to 1993.

Like most plug-in hybrids, the Ramcharger’s gasoline engine only makes electricity; it doesn’t move the wheels directly. The truck’s huge 70.8-kWh battery is bigger than most PHEV batteries. It can be charged or used to power the generator that the 3.6-liter V-6 engine under the hood powers.

Ram says that a full charge will let you drive 145 miles on electricity alone. The gas engine acts as a safety net, improving the range when the battery’s charge level drops below a certain level. The ICE can start as early as Off-Road, Snow, Sport, or Tow, and three EV modes can be chosen: Electric+, E-Save, and Eco.

The 400-volt design of the Ramcharger lets it charge at a top speed of 145 kilowatts when connected to a DC fastcharger. Ram says this can add 50 miles to the range in just 10 minutes. Most people will use the truck’s Level 2 (240V) charger at home, which can handle up to 11 kilowatts.

The Ramcharger does more than charge your devices. It lives up to its name. Because it can work in both directions, its highest output of 7.2 kW can power a house or charge an electric vehicle that got stuck. Like the Ford F-150 hybrid and F-150 Lightning, the Ram’s generator can be reached through the charge port or the power panel in the bed of the truck.

A Big and Strong Ram

Both the front and back electric motors in the all-wheel-drive Ramcharger make 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque, which helps the car go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The front motor instantly disconnects from the wheels when the truck is not speeding up between stoplights or when dual-axle traction is not needed. This saves power. When required, an automatic locking differential on the back axle gives you more grip.

Ram says that the Ramcharger can go up to 690 miles without stopping if both the gas tank and the battery are full. Of course, the estimate of almost 700 miles is based on constant highway speeds, which are less good for electric cars than traffic that comes and goes.

The same warning is valid when towing, especially if the Ramcharger is connected to a car that weighs close to its 14,000-pound limit. It not only has the same grade as the Ram EV, but it also weighs over 2400 pounds more than the gas-only cars. Also, the Ramcharger can carry up to 2625 pounds, which is more than its ICE cousin’s 2300 pounds.

Person in the STLA Frame

It is built on the STLA Frame body-on-frame platform, just like its electric twin. It has bigger steel frame rails that cover the fuel tank and batteries and makes room for them. There are four corner air springs and an independent rear suspension in every Ramcharger. These things let you change the height of the ride.

Even though there are changes under the skin, the Ramcharger looks more like its non-hybrid brothers that have had facelifts than it does the Ram 1500 REV. The PHEV version is easy to spot because it has “RAM” logos on its bodywork. These badges have a different design than the ones on the EV truck. Besides that, most Ramchargers can be told apart by body-color accents and taillights that go all the way to the trunk.

The Ram plug-in hybrid truck will only come as a crew cab with a single bed length. However, the range will still include cars like the Tungsten and Limited, which are more expensive, as well as the Laramie, Big Horn, and even the Tradesman, which looks like a workhorse. Even though the base Ramchargers don’t have all of these features yet, we know that the most expensive ones will live up to the brand’s reputation for luxury.

What’s inside the Ramcharger

The inside of the Ramcharger is very similar to the inside of past full-size Rams, which have been known for a long time for having great fit and finish. The 12.0- or 14.5-inch tablet on the dashboard is powered by Uconnect 5, which lets you use Android Auto and Apple CarPlay wirelessly. It also has a gauge cluster that is all computerized.

There are also two wireless charging pads, a head-up display, a camera-fed rearview mirror, and a 10.3-inch tablet facing the front passenger that can be added to the Ramcharger. The Ramcharger comes with a number of active safety features and a Level 2 hands-free driver-assistance system that works like GM’s Super Cruise and Ford’s BlueCruise.

The top-of-the-line Ramcharger Tungsten model might be the best choice for people who want a plug-in hybrid pickup truck that looks as good as the Mercedes-Benz S80e PHEV. Inside, the rich leather covers everything. The front seats have plush inserts and can be massaged and adjusted in 24 different ways. The top is made of microsuede, the accents are metal with diamond-shaped knurling, and the color scheme is Indigo and Sea Salt.

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger will likely go on sale close to the end of 2024. But Ram says that you can pre-order the truck at RamRev.com for a short time. The plug-in hybrid will be less expensive than the electric version, even though prices won’t be announced for a while. This is because the electric version has a bigger battery pack.
