Rich people are building secret bunkers to stay safe during the coming end of the world. But what would a normal rich prepper—someone who has more money than most people but not enough to build a huge, fancy underground bunker—do? You could buy an off-grid van, which is pretty much self-sufficient.

The $250,000 Lightship AE.1 Cosmos Edition Camper Is An Ideal Choice For Preppers

Yes, it’s a risk because it might be hard to live above ground during the end of the world you’re planning for. The good news is that you can use your off-grid rig before chaos breaks out. (Imagine trying to have fun in a bunker underground while everyone else is still enjoying life on Earth before the end of the world.) It’s a great choice to spend $250,000 on a tool like this, the Lightship AE.1 Cosmos Edition.

Lightship showed off the AE.1, the production version of the L1 van, more than a year ago. It has a bathroom and room for four people to sleep. Like the prototype that came before it, the AE.1 can be equipped with an electric drive motor and a large battery pack to make towing easier on the car behind it. The drive motor cools the brakes on the tow car by slowing down the camper and helping the AE.1 move forward at the same time.

The AE.1’s power tools are powered by its 77.0-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack when the drive motor is not in use. This includes air conditioners and kitchen equipment like stoves, ovens, microwaves, fridges, and dishwashers. The first AE.1 Cosmos Editions should be released in the summer of 2025.

Lightship plans to mass-produce the camper in three trim levels: Atmos, Panos, and Terros. The prices for these will be $184,000, $151,000, and $125,000, respectively, even though they will only be making 50 AE.1 Cosmos Editions.

Lightship says that they will start making the AE.1 Atmos in late 2025 and then the Panos and Terros in the first and second halves of 2026. The base Terros needs the battery-powered electric drive motor that’s in the Atmos and Panos, even the Cosmos Edition. This motor helps with towing.
