Koenigsegg, a small Swedish company that makes super, hyper, and mega cars, is back with its brand-new “Raxial Flux” electric motor for the Dark Matter. It has a full carbon-fiber frame and cutting-edge constant six-phase winding. We talked to the company’s founder, Christian von Koenigsegg, to learn more about this 800-hp, 922-lb-ft, 86-pound surprise, an improvement on the company’s smaller Quark engine. It will power the hybrid Koenigsegg Gemera with two doors and four seats.

What is vertical thrust?

He says that the motor is “mostly axial, with a bit of radial flux—a radial effect on an axial flux layout.” Koenigsegg won’t give out all the facts until it has a title for its intellectual property. When the magnetic field moves, the motor, which is about 15 inches in diameter and 5.3 inches thick, looks like either a fat axial or a tall radial-flux motor. It fits neatly between an engine and a transmission because it combines axial-flux torque density and radial-flux power density.

Rotor, Stator, and Housing Made of Carbon Fiber

Tesla has wrapped the rotors in carbon fiber in its best-performing motors to keep the permanent magnets in place at high speeds. But Koenigsegg will be the first to produce a carbon-fiber rotor and stator. Everyone else uses a stack of layered steel plates to hold the rotor’s magnets and the stator’s copper windings together. This is because ferromagnetic steel strengthens the magnetic flux each magnet produces.

In these situations, steel with a carbon-based structure can be used. You might need more copper, giant fixed magnets, or both to eliminate the need for steel. But at the price Koenigsegg wants, this isn’t a big deal. The pictures show, at the very least, that the housing is made of carbon fiber.

800 HP and 922 lb-ft of power at low RPM

Even though it is made of carbon fiber, this large-diameter engine is not a reviver, which is what most people think. During our conversation, Koenigsegg said that Vmax was around 10,000 rpm, but the website said that the top speed was only 8,500 rpm, which is more like a piston engine. Since this is not the central unit that moves the EV, any choice is fine for a hybrid helper motor. There is more than enough power with 800 horsepower. There are 922 lb-ft of force.

There are six different ways to spin

The stator has two unique three-phase alternating current windings, which help it make more torque than three permanent-magnet electric machines of the same power could while also reducing present noise. David, a silicon-carbide inverter made by Koenigsegg, sends power to each stage. It’s 610 cubic inches big and only 33 pounds heavy. This inverter has a root mean square power of 1,300 Amps (AC) at 850 V (DC).

Dielectric cooling is added to custom battery packs

Koenigsegg makes their battery packs out of the cells they buy, but the way they cool is slightly different. Koenigsegg uses a special dielectric oil and a few other substances to cool the battery pack very directly. People say this method works better than sticking pipes and excellent plates to the bottoms of battery cells.

One, two, three, or four wheels that are powered by electricity

To sum up the Koenigsegg Gemera’s unique “Tourbillon” (watch movement) moving system, the Dark Matter motor is placed just in front of a mid-mounted twin-turbo V-8 engine, which is grabbed so that either one or both can move the car forward. These power sources go straight to all four wheels through a rotor shaft and bevel gears. Transfer gearing changes the power from each side of the engine into half-shafts, almost in line with the cylinders at the back of the machine. Torque is sent to each of the four half-shafts by a clutch, which lets the slippage needed to account for different wheel speeds in corners. The four-seat Gemera will only cost $2.6 million when sales start in early 2025.
