The Cadillac Lyriq has finally started selling well, even better than its European competitors, even though it had some problems during production and the EV market was slow at first. So, it’s a shame that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into possible problems with the Lyriq’s braking system. This isn’t good for both General Motors and happy Lyriq buyers.

The Lyriq’s anti-lock brakes are giving people trouble. Specifically, the internal spindle electronic brake control module can stop working when the ABS is on. The government says that 3,322 cars from the 2023 model year are being looked at. So far, no injuries or deaths have been reported because of the problem. The carmaker says that if the module breaks, drivers may see a “Brake System Failure” message on their digital instrument displays, and the ABS will not work either.

The Cadillac Lyriq, which is very popular, has ABS problems that are being looked into

At the moment, officials are only looking into what the owners have said to figure out the “scope and severity” of the problem. The NHTSA’s ODI Resume says that GM is putting out an over-the-air update to get ahead of the game. However, the new software will not fix the broken module. Instead, it’s meant to let drivers know when the car starts up, especially if a part breaks. The current “Brake System Failure” message seems to do a pretty good job of letting drivers know about the problem before they get on the road, so this doesn’t seem to be very helpful. At the very least, it might let drivers know about the problem before they get on the road, which could save technicians time when a broken Lyriq pulls into the service bay.

As of now, the NHTSA’s investigation doesn’t include any 2024 cars. This suggests that the issue only affects Lyrics that were made in the past with frames made of different materials. Without a doubt, that is great news. Unfortunately, GM can’t let another one of its popular EVs sit idle for a long time. This is especially true since the Chevrolet Blazer EV’s problematic software kept it out of service for months, even less so if it wants to start making money from these cars as soon as next year.
