Thieves like to steal Hellcats a lot. The Highway Loss Data Institute, part of the IIHS, was shocked by how many Dodge Charger Hellcats were stolen between 2020 and 2022. A recent HLDI Senior Vice President Matt Moore study says, “If you own a Hellcat, you better check your driveway.”

HLDI says that there were 6,128 theft reports for Charger Hellcats in the two years before. This works out to 255 monthly claims over a 24-month period, more than three times as many as the 2,197 claims made for the Dodge Charger with a Hemi, the second-most stolen vehicle.

What about the third, though? There were 878 claims for the Infiniti Q50. Between 2020 and 2022, each car had 100 theft claims. This means the Charger Hellcat was taken more than 60 times more often than the average car. HLDI warns that these numbers only include reports of stolen vehicles as a whole, not taken parts like wheels or catalytic converters.

The problem is getting worse, which is terrible. Between 2017 and 2019, the Infiniti Q60 had an average of two thefts for every 1,000 insured vehicle years. This is a typical way to measure how well something works in a given environment, making it the most stolen car. Between 2020 and 2022, 25 Charger Hellcats were stolen for every 1,000 years they were covered.

During the same period, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y were the least likely to be stolen, with only three claims for each. It’s unclear why Teslas were taken, but Sentry Mode or the fact that they are so linked and easy to track could be to blame. Maybe thieves do not want Teslas. But electric vehicles aren’t stolen very often, which makes sense since they aren’t as popular as regular vehicles.

You should spend more money on theft protection if you own a Charger Hellcat or another big Dodge muscle car with a V8 engine.
